Mushrooms with Warrenton, Virginia Mayor Carter Nevill

Late summer is a mushroom-y season and a great time to learn about this under-appreciated kingdom of life! Join mushroom expert Mayor Carter Nevill and The Clifton Institute's Executive Director Bert Harris on a walk in the woods to find and identify as many species of mushrooms as we can.

Piedmont Wildflower Walk

Come and see our native Piedmont grassland at its best! This field has never been planted but it’s very diverse. We will be looking for slender lespedeza in full bloom, early goldenrod, and grassleaf goldenrod, among other grassland species. The Clifton Institute's Executive Director Bert Harris will lead this walk through one of our most interesting habitats and teach participants how to identify grassland plants.

Fall Native Plant Sale

Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy is sponsoring a native plant sale with trees, shrubs, flowers, vines and ferns available for purchase from local nurseries. The sale will be staffed by volunteers knowledgeable about native plants. If you have boxes for carrying your plants, please bring them. Read more here.

Our Common Agenda Educational Series

The Virginia Conservation Network will be hosting a week of education and content for each of the chapters within Our Common Agenda, including webinars featuring each chapter's authors. These events will highlight and explain the policy suggestions contained within each briefing book chapter while celebrating the people who have worked diligently for months to craft the 2022 Our Common Agenda policy briefing book.

Walk with a Naturalist

Join us for a walk on our trails with one our naturalists. Unlike most of our programs, we won’t be looking for anything in particular. Instead we’ll amble and explore and see what we can find! This event is hosted by The Clifton Institute.

Raptor Migration Field Trip

Every fall raptors migrate south along the Appalachian Mountains. Come and witness the peak migration of Broad-winged Hawks. If we’re lucky we might see thousands! The Clifton Insitute's Executive Director and ornithologist Bert Harris will lead the group and discuss how to identify raptors in flight. We will meet at Snickers Gap, where there’s an excellent view of migrating raptors and other birds.

Blue Ridge PRISM In-Person Field Sessions

Join PRISM’s knowledgeable staff and volunteers in the field to learn invasive plant ID, herbicide safety, and a how-to for manual/chemical control techniques. In-person field sessions will be held in Charlottesville’s Azalea Park on September 25 and Rappahannock County Park in Washington, Virginia on October 17.

The Virginia Environmental Assembly brings together conservation leaders from across the Commonwealth to discuss Our Common Agenda to protect Virginia’s natural resources. This annual conference is hosted by Virginia Conservation Network, the partnership of more than 150 Virginia environmental organizations, including PEC.

2021 Farm-to-Table Dinner

Greater Piedmont Farmland Marketing Conference for Realtors

This conference is an opportunity for area real estate agents and appraisers to learn about marketing tools to improve the sale of farmland. The purpose of the conference is to provide realtors with the background knowledge in agriculture, conservation and open space preservation to advise new landowner to the appropriate resources to help them make land management decision. Hosted by Virginia Cooperative Extension, with presentations on conservation easments by Rex Linville and Peter Hujik of PEC.

Solar-Powered Water Pumping Systems for Livestock

Join Virginia Forage and Grassland Council for an in-person and hands-on workshop focused on water pumping systems for livestock. October 21 and 22, 2021 at Shenandoah Valley AREC – McCormick Farm, 128 McCormick Farm Circle, Raphine, Virginia. Participants will learn the principles and applications of solar-electric water pumping. The primary focus will be on solar-powered water pumping systems, however, some other alternatives will be discussed too. Learn more about these systems, some considerations for their use, and hear farmer experiences.

Poultry Processing Education and Training Session

Poultry processing is the term used by the poultry industry to describe the conversion of live poultry into raw poultry products fit for human consumption. Attendees to this workshop will learn about the equipment necessary for poultry processing and about American Farmland Trust's low cost portable processing equipment rental program.

Volunteer tree planting at Sky Meadows State Park!

Join The Piedmont Environmental Council, Friends of the Rappahannock, Goose Creek Association, John Marshall Soil & Water Conservation District, and Casey's Trees for a volunteer tree planting at Sky Meadows State Park on Friday, October 29 - Saturday, October 30! Volunteers will be needed in two shifts, from 9am-noon and 1-3pm, for planting 1,060 native tree tubelings (scalping, digging holes, planting, and pounding wooden stakes). This is a family friendly event, and volunteers of all ages are welcome! Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tree planting at The Clifton Institute

In the spring, The Clifton Institute planted 975 tree seedlings along the stream in our native grassland. They need your help finishing the planting with a few more trees. Please bring your own work gloves if you have them.

Rapidan River – Clark Mountain Rural Historic District Community Meeting

Join neighbors and friends to learn more about the initiative to list the Rapidan River – Clark Mountain Rural Historic District on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Staff from The Piedmont Environmental Council, along with the Fairfield Foundation and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources will lead this discussion about what a rural historic district is, the nomination process and the historical significance of the area.

Butcher Training Course

Rappahannock Center for Education has a new meat cutting program designed to prepare students to work in the meat processing field at a wholesale processing facility or in a restaurant or butcher establishment. Tuition is $900 for 12 classes commencing November 6, 2021. The program was created in partnership with American Farmland Trust and The Piedmont Environmental Council.

Project Feederwatch Giveaway with Friends of the Rappahannock and The Clifton Institute

Friends of the Rappahannock will be giving away free Project Feederwatch bird feeders at the Clifton Institute after our regular Wednesday morning bird walk! The feeders are first-come, first-serve, and the limit is one per family. A Friends of the Rappahannock instructor will give you instructions on how participate in Project Feederwatch, which is a community science project run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Having a bird feeder is a great way to learn about our winter birds and help contribute to science!
