Dear Mobility Advocates,

Happy Bike Month! May is packed with events, gatherings and group rides organized by Piedmont Mobility Alliance groups and partners. There’s something (sometimes several things!) to do almost every day of the month for all skill levels. Don’t miss out on this community-powered celebration of freedom to move around where you live.

See Bike Cville’s brand new website for a full list of events.

Although this email will focus mainly on bike month, several public meetings and infrastructure projects in the pipeline are likely to interest you, even if you don’t ride a bike. I’ll list those at the end, so be sure to read all the way through.

I know there is a lot to read but I think it’s worth your attention.

Bike Month Highlights

Bike Month BINGO
Bike month offers so many ways to get involved.  Try expanding your horizons by downloading and completing the Bike Month BINGO challenge. Riders who complete at least five suggested tasks (and share their triumph in person at Fridays After Five or on Instagram @bikecville) will receive bragging rights — and have their names announced at Fridays After Five. The flip side of the downloadable BINGO card lists a few Bike Month highlights.

Bike Month Business Challenge
RideShare is inviting businesses of all sizes, and their employees, to compete in a friendly competition to see who can log the most bike trips or total miles biked. By participating, your workplace will have a chance to win recognition for its commitment to sustainable commuting and for fostering a healthier and happier workforce.

Free Bridge Lane + Riverfest
Saturday, May 10
Free Bridge Bikefest: 12 – 2 p.m. at Darden Towe Park
Riverfest: 2 – 9 p.m. at Rivanna River Company (1520 E High Street)

Come explore the county’s newest car-free open spaceFree Bridge Lane! It’s the perfect place for people of all ages to walk, bike or roll – especially for learners. So, May 10, Albemarle County will be offering e-bike demonstrations, kids’ bike safety lessons and more! Don’t forget to bring your kids’ bikes if they’d like to test their skills.

Afterward, we’ll hop the short distance over to the Rivanna River Company for Riverfest where there will be music, games, food, drinks and more fun. These are two of my favorite events and the combination will make an amazing day!

More Ways to Get Involved

Below are some infrastructure and advocacy updates – all of which are quite interesting – listed in chronological order.

E-Bike Rebate, Round 2
Deadline: Wednesday, April 30, 5 p.m.

City residents can apply for the next round of 25 $1,000 vouchers for the purchase of an e-bike. Over 1,000 people applied in the last round. Winners were selected randomly. Learn more →

Fifth Street Road Diet + Bikeway
Survey Deadline: Wednesday, April 30

The City is planning to improve safety for all road users and add a protected two-way bikeway on Fifth Street from Cherry to Fifth Street Station. A survey to collect the public’s thoughts is about to close.

Hopefully you caught the letter I co-wrote with Liveable Cville and BPAC in the Daily Progress. It outlines some of the reasons why this is a great project.

Charlottesville BPAC Meeting
Thursday, May 1, 5 – 6:30 p.m.
City Hall (610 East Market Street)

The City of Charlottesville’s Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee meets hybridly on the first Thursday of every month, including this Thursday (May 1). Everyone is welcome!

The committee has also set up a new listserv to support online conversation about walking, biking, infrastructure and active mobility in the city. Sign up if you’d like to join the conversation!

Avon Street Multimodal Improvement Meeting
Thursday, May 8, 5 – 7 p.m.
Monticello High School (1400 Independence Way)

VDOT is exploring improvements to Avon Street at the Charlottesville/Albemarle boundary that would add either a shared use path or sidewalk + bike lane. This is one of the nastiest places to walk and bike, and improvements are much needed.

The 2025 Mobility Summit served to unofficially launch the two-year design effort of the Three Notched Trail.

Public Meeting: Three Notched Trail
Thursday, May 15, 6 – 8 p.m. (Presentation at 6:15 p.m.)
Crozet Elementary School (1407 Crozet Ave)

Albemarle will have the first of a series of public listening sessions about the Three Notched Trail that will run from Charlottesville to the Blue Ridge Tunnel. Let’s keep the momentum going from the Mobility Summit and get to work on specifics!

The County will also be hosting a Bike Month event (e-bike demos, kids safety lessons and more) at the same location from 5-7 p.m.

Numerous reasons to stop by!

Public Hearing: Fontaine / Hydraulic Bundle
Thursday, May 22, 5 – 7 p.m.
Department of Forestry (900 Natural Resources Drive )

Three separate projects will be discussed at this meeting, including a plan to add a shared-use path and crosswalks on Fontaine Avenue; a shared-use path under the 29 Bypass at Fontaine; and a new roundabout on Hydraulic Road at Stonefield Shops.
