Event Series: Wavyleaf Basketgrass ID and Mapping Workshop

Wavyleaf Basketgrass ID and Mapping Workshop

June 8, 2024 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Join PEC, the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) for one of two workshops on the invasive wavyleaf basketgrass.

10 a.m., Saturday, June 1: https://www.meetup.com/patcvolunteerevents/events/300868611/

10 a.m., Saturday, June 8: https://www.meetup.com/patcvolunteerevents/events/300868579/

This species is a recent addition to North America and a serious threat to the ecology of our Eastern deciduous forests. The Appalachian Trail corridor in Northern Virginia and Maryland is a major battlefront in stopping its spread.

Participants will be trained on wavyleaf biology, ecology and identification. In addition, we’ll introduce our PATC ArcGIS mapping app “Field Maps”. Participants will be given information on the new mapping app prior to the workshop so that they can load it onto their phone.

The “classroom” segment of the workshop will be at Sky Meadows State Park, 11012 Edmonds Ln., Delaplane, VA in the carriage barn. The field session will be nearby on National Park Service or PEC-easement land.

Come prepared to go off-trail through the forest. Wear boots, and appropriate clothing, and bring water and a packed lunch. All participants will be asked to adopt a section of land or trail to monitor for wavyleaf this summer for a minimum of three days. For more information, please contact Rob Lamar at [email protected].
