Community Meeting on Data Centers and Transmission Lines in Bealeton

April 29 @ 6:30 pm 8:00 pm

Join The Piedmont Environmental Council and our partners in local community groups, Citizens for Fauquier CountyProtect Catlett and Protect Fauquier, for a community meeting about proposed data centers and transmission lines in southern Fauquier County and surrounding areas.

This meeting will take place on Monday, April 29 from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at Liberty High School (auditorium) in Bealeton. Register →

Background

In December of last year, PJM, the organization that coordinates electricity transmission in 13 states and D.C., finalized its preferred options for transmission line routes including one major upgrade of an existing line running through Fauquier, Prince William and Loudoun counties. Other routes impacting the area that were previously considered are anticipated to be considered again in the future. These expansion projects are being driven by the enormous amount of electricity demand coming from the explosion of data centers in Northern Virginia.

To add to the problem, data center companies are increasingly looking for land to develop farther away from current data center hubs. Alongside recently approved data centers in nearby Culpeper and Prince William counties, numerous proposals have emerged in Southern Fauquier, posing additional risks to local communities and the environment. We’ll talk about some of these projects and provide you with information to help you weigh in with your elected officials.

Mapping the issue

PEC’s interactive web map details some of the regional transmission proposals under consideration due to data center demand growth.
