Your Role

We’re looking for a detail oriented self-starter to join PEC’s team as our Buy Fresh Buy Local Coordinator. The Buy Fresh Buy Local Coordinator works to support local farms and a strong rural economy in the Virginia Piedmont. This part-time, temporary position  will successfully update and produce PEC’s three print Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter publications: Loudoun County, Northern Piedmont, and Charlottesville Area (which includes Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson counties). Buy Fresh Buy Local helps connect residents to local food throughout our region and provide local producers a venue for promoting their products. This position also monitors VA Food MarketMaker, the BFBL database tool, to ensure it is operational for BFBL participants, helps users with their listings as needed, and coordinates with MarketMaker administration to troubleshoot technical issues. The ideal candidate will possess strong project management and organizational skills, experience doing sponsor/fundraising outreach and coordination, knowledge of marketing and communications strategies, and strong writing and editing skills. The coordinator will work approximately 25 hours per week over the course of a nine-month period, likely from October 2026 through June 2027.

Key Responsibilities

Under direction of the co-director of outreach and communications, The Buy Fresh Buy Local coordinator will be responsible for the functions outlined below:

  • Coordinate and manage all facets of production of the 2027/2028 Buy Fresh Buy Local guides.
  • Assist area producers with the Buy Fresh Buy Local online sign-up process through Virginia MarketMaker, including reviewing business profiles for accuracy and completion and working with Virginia MarketMaker to resolve technical issues.
  • Edit producer-submitted content for style, listing consistency and grammar.
  • Secure funding support for the three guides: update PEC’s existing sponsor packet, reach out to past sponsors and work with PEC’s advancement team to identify and contact prospective sponsors.
  • Create marketing copy, including farm profiles and PEC-focused articles and information for inclusion in each guide.
  • Supervise volunteers and/or interns as needed.
  • Work with PEC’s communications team to promote the Buy Fresh Buy Local program through external communications such as social media, email alerts and press releases.
  • Work with PEC’s volunteer coordinator to distribute published Buy Fresh Buy Local guides broadly across our nine-county region.
  • Connect with the Pasa Sustainable Agriculture and work with FoodMarketMaker to update website content on buylocalpiedmont.org.
  • Support PEC’s communications and outreach work around local food systems, in coordination with PEC’s Community Farm staff.

Geographic Focus

This position can be based out of PEC’s headquarters offices in Warrenton or Charlottesville, VA, with occasional travel to locations within PEC’s nine-county service area. After an initial onboarding period and at the manager’s discretion, this position is eligible for hybrid status. PEC’s hybrid work policy includes a requirement of at least one day per week in the office.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong work ethic and commitment to PEC’s core values, mission and vision.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing complex projects and/or producing print publications with many simultaneously moving parts and firm deadlines.
  • 1-3 years experience with marketing, communications and/or fundraising.
  • Project management, organizational and prioritization skills; problem-solving and organizational skills; acute attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to engage with community members, by phone, in-person, as well as through online communications.
  • Strong digital literacy, including ability to manage calendars, track tasks, and navigate digital records, as well as learn new software applications and digital platforms. 
  • Ability to work independently, using good judgement, adhering to deadlines and representing The Piedmont Environmental Council professionally and responsibly.
  • Strong initiative and customer service mindset.
  • Working knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft Office software products.
  • Reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passion for sustainable/local food systems and working agricultural economy.
  • Fluency or experience  with WordPress, MarketMaker, Asana, Canva, Salesforce or similar platforms.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

This position will be completed primarily in an office environment with extended periods of sitting or standing and the use of a computer, keyboard, mouse, email and telephone. Outdoor work involves field visits with producers throughout the region and delivery of published guides. This position involves direct verbal and written communication with sponsors and producers. Occasional lifting of materials up to 30 lbs. is required.

Compensation

This is a temporary, part-time (approximately 25 hours/week), non-exempt position with minimal benefits. The salary is $25 per hour.
