Solarize Piedmont

In 2016, The Piedmont Environmental Council made sure to practice what it preaches. The prior year, we had teamed up with Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) and the Northern Virginia Regional Commission to launch a grassroots 'Solarize' campaign aimed at bringing more solar power to the Piedmont. Soon after we launched the citizen sign-up form, we requested a proposal for our headquarters building at 45 Horner Street in Warrenton, VA.

After working through the details with our contractor, Solar Solutions for All, we chose to move forward with 38 PV panels and microinverters.

The photovoltaic system is just under 10kW in size, cost about $34,000 and should produce around 16,000 kWh/Year (with an estimated annual savings on our electric bills of around $2000). It's a long-term investment and one that we are very proud of. A big 'thank you' to the donors who stepped up to help with the upfront cost!

In addition to the savings on our electric bills. It is estimated that over the life of our system, 338 tons of carbon dioxide will be eliminated from our footprint. Equivalent to:

  • Planting 7,875 trees
  • 329,354 pounds (164.7 tons) of coal burned
