SUMMARY:Sources of Conservation Funding Workshop and Social
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to this free workshop to learn more about sources of funding and technical assistance for conservation and land management! Join friends\, neighbors and staff from the John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District\, Fauquier County’s Conservation Easement Program\, and The Piedmont Environmental Council for an evening at the Fauquier Livestock Exchange. \n\n\n\nWorkshop hosts will go over the basics of conservation easements\, including opportunities to participate in the Fauquier County Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) program and/or enroll in the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Agricultural Land Easement (ALE) program\, and learn more about agricultural cost-share programs offered by the Soil and Water Conservation District\, for practices like livestock fencing and alternative watering systems\, and programs to enhance wildlife and pollinators. The event is informal and designed for neighbors to learn from each other’s experiences and engage with the organizations before and after the presentation. \n\n\n\nMore information and registration → \n\n\n\nThe event is free and open to the public. While this event is in Fauquier County\, much of the information is relevant to other geographies and all are welcome to attend. \n\n\n\nPre-registration is requested to help us plan but is not required. Dinner and light refreshments will be provided. Erik Foxx-Nettnin from The Polished Foxx will be cooking up locally sourced\, grass-finished burgers and hotdogs. A mix of sides will be available for vegetarians. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Montana Lanier Ruffner at mlanier@pecva.org or by phone at 540-347-2334 ext. 7009. \n\n\n\n\nMore information and registration →\n\n\n\n\nThis event is made possible by the generous co-presenters and The Piedmont Environmental Council’s Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund. \n\n\n\nPEC’s Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund was established in 2003 to protect land with important natural\, historic\, scenic and agricultural resources in Fauquier County. The Fund provides direct funding for environmental stewardship on working farmland\, technical support for easement donations\, and educational workshops on conservation and management options. Learn more about the Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund and donate here. \n\n\n\nPhoto credits: Cattle using stream crossing courtesy John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District; Tractor by Bruce Jones; Fauquier farmland aerial by Will Parsons\, Chesapeake Bay Program.

SUMMARY:Free Conservation Lecture Series at the Culpeper County Library
DESCRIPTION:Join local environmental nonprofits The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) and Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR) from 7-8 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month for a free lecture at the Culpeper County Library (Meeting Room\, 271 Southgate Shopping Center\, Culpeper\, VA 22701). \n\n\n\nPlease register by Culpeper County Library at 540-825-8691 or email infodesk@cclva.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMay 9 – Data Centers in Virginia \n\n\n\nJoin Sarah Parmelee of The Piedmont Environmental Council to learn about data centers\, what they are and what they mean for Culpeper and Virginia. The Commonwealth is already home to the largest and fastest-growing data center market in the world. However\, a glut of new data centers are either under construction or approved all over Virginia\, including Culpeper. This unchecked growth carries an insatiable demand for massive energy upgrades\, extensive acreage\, and tremendous water intake\, jeopardizing the state’s efforts to meet its climate goals\, improve air and water quality\, advance land conservation\, and protect national and state parks. \n\n\n\nJune 13 – Expanding River Access\n\n\n\nJoin Michael Shaw\, River Steward at Friends of the Rappahannock\, to learn about ongoing efforts to expand river access in our communities and how you can explore your local waterways. \n\n\n\nJuly 11 – Solar for Your Home\n\n\n\nJoin Ashish Kapoor\, The Piedmont Environmental Council’s Senior Energy & Climate Advisor\, to learn about rooftop solar options for homeowners looking to save money\, reduce their carbon footprint and gain energy independence.  \n\n\n\nAugust 8 – Bringing Back Grassland Birds\n\n\n\n(this event was canceled due to weather) Join October Greenfield\, The Piedmont Environmental Council’s in-house ornithologist and habitat specialist\, to learn about local efforts by the Virginia Grassland Bird Initiative to restore grassland habitat for the benefit of birds and farms across the Virginia Piedmont\, Blue Ridge and Shenandoah Valley. \n\n\n\nSeptember 12 – Conserving Forests for Climate\n\n\n\nJoin Bryan Hofmann\, Deputy Director at Friends of the Rappahannock for an informational talk about Rappahannock Carbon. This new program aims to help landowners in the Rappahannock River Region protect and enhance their forests\, working landscapes and urban tree canopy through carbon market resources and other conservation programs.  \n\n\n\nOctober 10 – Tree Planting Programs\n\n\n\nJoin Sarah Dishman\, Urban and Community Forestry Specialist\, to learn how Friends of the Rappahannock supports landowners interested in planting trees on their property. Gain information on choosing the right tree for your property incentive programs available within the community.

SUMMARY:Nature Night: Nocturnal Insects at the Piedmont Memorial Overlook
DESCRIPTION:Join The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) and The Clifton Institute for an evening discovering the diversity of moths and other nocturnal insects at PEC’s Piedmont Memorial Overlook! \n\n\n\nThis first-ever nighttime program at the overlook will start with an introduction to the property\, followed by a short hike through the native meadow before observing the interesting moths and other insects that have gathered on a backlit white sheet. This is an incredible chance to discover the magical world of nocturnal insects we rarely get to see\, and we encourage participants to submit their observations to iNaturalist! Registration is required. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits adjacent to Sky Meadows State Park within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains that is a patchwork of forest\, livestock pasture\, and mountainous fields. The land was actively farmed from the late 18th century until the recent past\, and was heavily grazed by cattle. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, PEC began an extensive restoration effort on the 50-acre parcel with funding from the USDA\, first eliminating fescue and other non-native plants from the pasture\, and then seeding native grasses and wildflowers. The property now serves as an active demonstration site for landowners who are interested in viewing habitat restoration practices. \n\n\n\nThe 15+ acre native meadow is home to songbirds\, butterflies\, raptors\, bees and black bears. It was planted with 16 native wildflower species that provide forage for pollinators and habitat for grassland and shrubland birds. PEC manages the meadow using prescribed fire\, late winter mowing and invasive species monitoring. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nWeather policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, barring any adverse weather conditions. \n\n\n\nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable clothes you can move in! We will be walking through grass and tall vegetation. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Water bottle\, chair\, headlamp or flashlight\, bug spray\, camera\, curiosity\, a sense of adventure! Water and snacks will be available for attendees. \n\n\n\n* Please note that there are no restroom facilities available at the Overlook. \n\n\n\nDirections: We will email directions to registrants 1-2 days before the event \n\n\n\nQuestions? Please contact October Greenfield at ogreenfield@pecva.org.
