Photo by Hugh Kenny/PEC.\n\n\n\nJoin The Piedmont Environmental Council and Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area Association (VPHAA) for a History Hike at the Piedmont Memorial Overlook on Saturday\, September 13! As we walk along the trails at overlook\, Travis Shaw and Ian MacDougall from VPHAA will share a variety of stories on the history surrounding Ashby’s Gap. The stories will range from a brief overview of the landscape\, to Native American uses of the mountain gap\, to Ashby’s Gap in the context of the American Revolution and the Civil War. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\nThe land encompassing the Piedmont Memorial Overlook was historically part of a territory occupied by Siouan-speaking people that spanned more than half of the present-day state of Virginia. The rolling green hills of field and forest\, dotted by historic towns and villages\, and crisscrossed by gravel roads have earned the area a well-deserved reputation for its scenic beauty and historic significance\, from pre-colonial times to European settlement\, through the Civil War and development of modern agriculture. A verdant agricultural landscape stretches 17 miles between the Bull Run Mountains to the east and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. To the south lies the Crooked Run Valley\, extending toward Delaplane. To the north lies Clarke and Loudoun counties. \n\n\n\nPEC’s Plantings for the Piedmont Program Coordinator Linnea Sherman and Wildlife Habitat Program Manager October Greenfield will share information about the native plants\, birds and other wildlife we see during the walk\, as well as more background on the PMO. \n\n\n\nThe event is free but registration is required on Eventbrite. Space is limited. \n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains that is a patchwork of forest\, livestock pasture\, and mountainous fields. The land was actively farmed from the late 18th century until the recent past\, and was heavily grazed by cattle. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, PEC began an extensive restoration effort on the 50-acre parcel with funding from the USDA\, first eliminating fescue and other non-native plants from the pasture\, and then seeding native grasses and wildflowers. The property now serves as an active demonstration site for landowners who are interested in viewing habitat restoration practices. \n\n\n\nThe 15+ acre native meadow is home to songbirds\, butterflies\, raptors\, bees and black bears. It was planted with 16 native wildflower species that provide forage for pollinators and habitat for grassland and shrubland birds. PEC manages the meadow using prescribed fire\, late winter mowing\, and invasive species monitoring.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community meeting Tuesday\, Sept. 16 from 6-8 p.m. to hear from Julie Bolthouse\, PEC’s Director of Land Use and one of the leaders of the Virginia Data Center Reform Coalition\, about data centers’ environmental impacts and how advocating for regulations at the state and local level and transparency can achieve better outcomes for communities. PEC’s Albemarle County Senior Land Use Representative\, Rob McGinnis will talk about Albemarle County specifically\, the ongoing Data Center Ordinance update\, and how you can get involved this fall. \n\n\n\nThere will be an opportunity to ask questions of staff who are working on the ground in Loundoun\, Culpeper\, Orange and Albemarle Counties\, where data center development and proposals are heaviest. PEC has been there every step of the way. \n\n\n\nLast year\, PEC and the Southern Environmental Law Center successfully advocated that larger data centers (those over 40\,000 square feet) must go through the local legislative review process of a Special Use Permit\, which requires opportunities for public feedback. DESCRIPTION:Take part in the annual celebration of the beloved Rivanna Trail in Charlottesville (and National Public Lands Day). There are a wide-variety of hikes\, runs\, and bike rides of various distances\, including the full 20-mile loop or half-loop. All activities will begin and then conclude with a finish line celebration at the Rivanna River Company. So\, if that means just spending time at the Rivanna River Company in community with others (starting at 12 p.m.)\, that’s great!

DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to this free workshop to learn more about sources of funding and technical assistance for conservation and land management! Join friends\, neighbors and staff from the John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District\, Fauquier County’s Department of Agricultural Development\, the Natural Resource Conservation Service and The Piedmont Environmental Council for an evening at Powers Farm & Brewery. \n\n\n\nWorkshop hosts will go over the basics of conservation easements\, including opportunities to participate in the Fauquier County Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) program and/or enroll in the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Agricultural Land Easement (ALE) program\, and learn more about agricultural cost-share programs offered by the Soil and Water Conservation District\, for practices like livestock fencing and alternative watering systems\, and programs like the Virginia Grassland Bird Initiative to enhance wildlife and pollinators. \n\n\n\nThe event is informal and designed for neighbors to learn from each other’s experiences and engage with the organizations before and after the presentation. Food and refreshments will be available.\n\n\n\n5:30-6:15 p.m.: Presentations\n\n\n\n6:15-7:00 p.m.: Meet & greet your fellow community members and presenters\n\n\n\n\nJohn Marshall Soil & Water Conservation District – Agricultural cost-share programs to improve soil health and water quality\, including livestock exclusion fencing\, alternative watering systems\, riparian buffer plantings\, nutrient management projects\, and more. \n\n\n\nSoil & Water Conservation Districts provide technical assistance and financial incentives to assist with the installation of approved conservation practices. Cost-share can range from 75% up to 100% of allowable costs for some practices. \n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Environmental Council – Introduction to conservation easements. A conservation easement is a voluntary legal agreement between a landowner and a conservation organization designed to protect the scenic open space\, wildlife habitat and/or forest and agricultural resources on private property. A donation of a conservation easement may provide for federal income tax deduction\, Virginia state income tax credit\, estate tax reduction\, and reduced real estate taxes. The Virginia Grassland Bird Initiative (VGBI) is a partnership between Smithsonian’s Virginia Working Landscapes\, PEC\, American Farmland Trust and Quail Forever—is innovating new ways to reverse the declines of grassland birds on working lands in the Virginia Piedmont\, Blue Ridge\, and Shenandoah Valley. Together\, VGBI partners work with landowners and producers in 16 counties to restore grassland habitat for the benefit of birds and farms. Plantings for the Piedmont\, a partnership between PEC and Friends of the Rappahannock\, supports qualifying landowners in the planting of native trees and shrubs on their property. From beginning to end\, we help with material\, labor and financial assistance. We connect landowners to third-party cost-share programs\, and PEC grant funding helps cover other project costs. Qualifying counties include Rappahannock\, Fauquier\, Culpeper\, Madison\, Greene\, Orange\, Loudoun and Clarke. \n\n\n\nFauquier County Department of Agricultural Development – Fauquier County’s Purchase of Development Rights Program is a voluntary program that pays landowners to protect the farmland and natural resource assets of their property. This program allows landowners to enter into agreements to sell the development potential of qualifying property to the County while maintaining the right to continue to own and use the property. The purpose of the PDR Program is to protect farmland and retain the agricultural industry’s critical mass\, in particular\, farm parcels that are economically viable operations. \n\n\n\nThis event is made possible by the generous co-presenters and The Piedmont Environmental Council’s Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund. \n\n\n\nPEC’s Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund was established in 2003 to protect land with important natural\, historic\, scenic and agricultural resources in Fauquier County. The Fund provides direct funding for environmental stewardship on working farmland\, technical support for easement donations\, and educational workshops on conservation and management options. You will also be able to go home with a bag of seeds to plant in your own garden! \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public but registration is required. Water and snacks will be available for attendees. \n\n\n\n*Unfortunately\, we are unable to accommodate pets at this event. \n\n\n\nDirections: We will email directions to registrants. \n\n\n\nPhoto credit Brooke McDonough\, Virginia Working Landscapes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains that is a patchwork of forest\, livestock pasture\, and mountainous fields. The land was actively farmed from the late 18th century until the recent past\, and was heavily grazed by cattle. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, PEC began an extensive restoration effort on the 50-acre parcel with funding from the USDA\, first eliminating fescue and other non-native plants from the pasture\, and then seeding native grasses and wildflowers. The property now serves as an active demonstration site for landowners who are interested in viewing habitat restoration practices. \n\n\n\nThe 15+ acre native meadow is home to songbirds\, butterflies\, raptors\, bees and black bears. It was planted with 16 native wildflower species that provide forage for pollinators and habitat for grassland and shrubland birds. PEC manages the meadow using prescribed fire\, late winter mowing\, and invasive species monitoring.

Together\, VGBI partners work with landowners and producers in 16 counties to restore grassland habitat for the benefit of birds and farms. \n\n\n\nLauria McShane\n\n\n\nLauria McShane: Lauria McShane joined PEC’s staff in October 2023 as an assistant to the Virginia Grassland Bird Initiative (VGBI). Prior to joining PEC\, Lauria graduated from Sweet Briar College in May 2023 with a B.S. in Biology. Lauria also studied in the Conservation\, Biodiversity and Society program at the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation in the fall of 2022. Shortly after graduation\, Lauria worked with the James River Association as a riparian buffer steward. DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to a free\, open house at Ducard Vineyards to mingle with each other and conservation practitioners in the area including the Piedmont Environmental Council\, the Virginia Grassland Bird Initiative and the Shenandoah National Park Trust.  \n\n\n\nWe hope to meet Etlan landowners and managers and share about the many resources and support that these organizations can offer. Learn about tree planting\, invasive plant control\, forest management\, pollinators\, wildlife\, adaptive grazing\, native plants\, dark skies\, conservation easements and more. \n\n\n\nThis is a casual\, afternoon event. Show up as you are\, but let us know you’re coming. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
