SUMMARY:Solar on the Farm Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A workshop to introduce farmers and rural businesses in Fauquier and adjacent counties to opportunities for integrating distributed solar into their operations. \n\n\n\nWe will discuss opportunities to improve your farm business’ bottom line through energy efficiency and behind-the-meter solar energy. This includes small agriculture generator programs\, net metering\, and shared solar\, to name a few. Gain the knowledge to help your farm or rural business take advantage of available opportunities and incentives\, and examine the potential financial benefits of installing solar at your operation. \n\n\n\nGuest speakers from the USDA Rural Energy for America Program\, Virginia Cooperative Extension\, Solar United Neighbors\, and representatives from farms with solar installations will share information and experience. \n\n\n\nEvent partners include PEC\, Fauquier Farm Bureau\, Fauquier County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension\, John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District\, and the Fauquier Climate Change Group. \n\n\n\nPlease note: This workshop is not intended for landowners interested in utility-scale solar. It is focused on small-scale solar that can be integrated into the existing agricultural operation and help supplement the on-site energy needs of the farm. \n\n\n\nLunch will be provided (including vegetarian options). This event is free\, however\, advance registration is required by January 25. \n\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/solar-on-the-farm-workshop-tickets-472911800927 \n\n\n\nLocation: PATH Foundation – Conference Room A & B 321 Walker Drive #301 Warrenton\, VA 20186 \n\n\n\nA ground-mounted solar array. SUMMARY:Getting Around in Charlottesville: Results from the Move2HealthEquity Community Mobility Survey
DESCRIPTION:How do people get around in Charlottesville? Why don’t people walk\, bike or use transit more often? What can we do about transportation in our area? Move2Health Equity’s neighborhood-based community survey provides new insight into these questions. \n\n\n\nJoin the meeting at tinyurl.com/mobilityreport. \n\n\n\n428 people answered 15 questions in this 2021 survey about how they get around\, how they would like to get around\, what barriers they face and what solutions they would propose. The survey also asked residents how Covid-19 affected their transportation patterns. \n\n\n\nPeter Krebs\, of The Piedmont Environmental Council\, will present the survey’s primary findings and its implications. Other members of Move2Health Equity’s Active Communities team will also be present to offer their perspectives and suggested next steps as well. The presentation will last approximately 30 minutes\, followed by discussion. \n\n\n\nThe release of a 100-page report will correspond with this meeting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Move2Health Equity Coalition promotes healthy eating and active lifestyles for all community members. The coalition works through a Collective Impact Model in which independent member organizations combine resources to make a difference in areas where their missions overlap. Move2Health has four workgroups that address core priorities: Access to Healthcare\, Healthy Spaces\, Active Communities and Healthy Food Systems. \n\n\n\nFor 50 years\, The Piedmont Environmental Council has worked to promote compact\, livable cities\, surrounded by distinctly rural lands where farms\, forests\, and natural systems predominate. In 2021\, PEC brought together the Piedmont Mobility Alliance: a coalition of organizations that share a vision of a better-connected community for walking\, biking and other forms of active transportation in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. \n\n\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Wilderness Crossing Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:@ Locust Grove Middle School\, 6368 Flat Run Road\, Locust Grove\, VA 22508 \n\n\n\nImage credit The Piedmont Environmental Council.\n\n\n\nPEC and our partners will lay out the case against the proposed Wilderness Crossing development in Orange County and give you the information you need to make sure your voice is heard – starting now\, and again in person once the issue comes before the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors. \n\n\n\nFor over 10 years\, a coalition of historic preservation organizations\, PEC\, and the National Park Service have worked to raise awareness and concerns about threats to the Wilderness Battlefield. For the past year\, the Coalition’s efforts have focused on Wilderness Crossing\, and now we are holding our own town hall on October 25. \n\n\n\n**If you can\, please RSVP to Katie Smolar\, Journey Through Hallowed Ground Education Director\, at katie@jthg.org so we can plan for enough seating. Event free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nEvent co-hosted by The Piedmont Environmental Council\, Central Virginia Battlefields Trust\, Friends of Wilderness Battlefield\, Journey Through Hallowed Ground\, Preservation Virginia\, American Battlefield Trust\, National Parks Conservation Association\, and National Trust for Historic Preservation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about Wilderness Crossing at pecva.org/wilderness-crossing. \n\n\n\nWilderness Crossing is a 2\,600-acre rezoning and development proposal in Orange County for the intersection of Rt. 3 and Rt. 20 adjacent to Wilderness Battlefield and across from Lake of the Woods. It would be the largest land rezoning in Orange County history and could raise taxes for county residents and cause unnecessary harm to natural and historic resources for years to come. \n\n\n\nIn addition to concerns about taxes\, infrastructure (water and sewer)\, traffic\, and habitat fragmentation\, Wilderness Crossing is also the site of numerous unreclaimed gold mines—essentially\, mines that have never been closed off and cleaned up of contaminants such as mercury\, arsenic\, cadmium and lead. The largest mine on the property\, called the Vaucluse mine\, has been documented by state inspectors as the site of extreme mercury contamination. Since it was never cleaned up\, the tailings pit is likely still leaching toxic chemicals into Shotgun Hill Branch today and is an expected source of contamination in Wilderness Run\, and ultimately\, the Rapidan and Rappahannock rivers. PEC recommends that Orange County seriously consider how the toxic legacy of gold mining at this location could impact the health\, safety and welfare of future residents and downstream communities. \n\n\n\nPEC and the Wilderness Battlefield Coalition has been following the Wilderness Crossing proposal since the application was first submitted by developer KEG Associates III in March of 2021. \n\n\n\nPlease contact Don McCown at dmccown@pecva.org if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:"Right of Way" Book Club & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The City of Charlottesville\, Jefferson-Madison Regional Library\, and Piedmont Environmental Council invite you to read and discuss the new book Right of Way: Race\, Class\, and the Silent Epidemic of Pedestrian Deaths in America by Angie Schmitt. \n\n\n\nHow it works: \n\n\n\nSign up to let us know you’re interested.Get the book. You can eitherorder a copy from Island Press (use the discount code SCMITT for 20% off)\,pick up a free copy of Right of Way from the Market Street branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (201 East Market Street\, 10-4 Mon – Sat) while supplies last\, orcheck out the book at Jefferson-Madison Regional Library.Join us for an online discussion on Thursday\, February 18\, 5-6:30 p.m. on Zoom. Registration required.Study / discussion questions are included below.\n\n\n\nThis event is free. Contact pkrebs@pecva.org or call 434-970-3720 for more information. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStudy Questions \n\n\n\nIs it fair to deem the pedestrian crisis an epidemic? Why or why not?Angie says that our assumptions about who is getting injured and dying might be wrong. Does it matter? Does it suggest targeted approaches and solutions? What are some factors that Angie says make some people more likely to be injured or killed than others? She also outlines some geographic considerations. How do these overlap and where can those zones be found in our area? There are two women in the book who lose sons in car crashes: Amy Cohen and Raquel Nelson. Their experiences are very different. How do you think their race and social status impacted their treatment?Explain the significance of Virginia’s new statute decriminalizing jay-walking. What are the socioeconomic implications? Will it change pedestrian or driver behaviors? Will it save lives? What are reasonable next steps? Are bigger vehicles an irreversible trend? What role can we play as outdoors advocates and influencers in a marketplace where large vehicles have names like Outback\, Denali or Tundra? Is Charlottesville ready for a Vision Zero Policy? The city has resolved to end homelessness; isn’t that an equally complicated and vexing issue? What about Albemarle? What are some Vision-Zero strategies that might work in our area?Angie cites the notion that “Cars are essential to the American Way of Life\,” is a barrier to progress. But does it need to be? Are there ways to talk about safety for pedestrians that don’t diminish drivers’ access to opportunities? In our federal system it’s not always clear which level of government ought to fund local transportation. Where\, in your opinion\, ought that responsibility reside? What actions can you take to bring about change at that particular level?Throughout the book\, Angie pushes against the prevalent idea that most traffic fatalities are caused by users (often pedestrians’) rather than the system. Do you think the advent of autonomous vehicles will prove her wrong or prescient? Is every preventable death an injustice? If so\, why? If not\, how do we decide? Is more enforcement a good idea? What modified approaches might better balance different kinds of justice?Do groups like Families for Safe Streets\, Mothers Against Drunk Driving\, Everytown for Gun Safety speak for all Americans or is their appeal limited to the Middle Class similar to\, say\, PTOs? Does that matter?Getting back to the question of epidemics and avoiding unnecessary deaths\, what has COVID taught us\, positive and negative\, about strategies that are likely to win the public imagination?\n\n\n\nHuge thanks to Charles Brown and Angie Schmitt\, who contributed questions to this list. \n\n\n\nYou can watch Angie’s November 30 presentation here.
