SUMMARY:Data Center Reform Lobby Day
DESCRIPTION:PEC staff joined a coalition of organizations in Richmond to demonstrate support for data center reform\, February 2023. Photo by Hugh Kenny/PEC.\n\n\n\nThe Data Center Reform Coalition is excited to announce our 2026 Lobby Day slated for Monday\, Feb. 9\, 2026. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we are urging state lawmakers to take action on the unchecked\, exponential growth of data centers in Virginia.\n\n\n\nThis event is your chance to lobby with fellow advocates in your district for a smarter development approach to data centers in our state. \n\n\n\nBackground: Virginia is home to the world’s largest concentration of data centers in the world\, dwarfing all other global markets. Each of these data centers consumes as much power as a small city\, creating a huge increase in future electricity infrastructure needs\, and their continued\, unfettered growth will have a disastrous impact on ratepayers\, our communities\, and the environment. \n\n\n\nSeveral pieces of legislation have been introduced for the 2026 General Assembly session that advocate for a smarter development approach and embrace our four main pillars of reform: \n\n\n\n\nEnhanced Transparency\n\n\n\nState Oversight\n\n\n\nProtections for Families and Businesses\n\n\n\nIncentives for Efficiency\n\n\n\n\nWe believe we can get legislation in place this year to bring about a smarter digital future for our state. Help us spread the word in February! \n\n\n\nHow it works: You will be led in your meetings by a lobbying expert and joined by others in your district\, so there is no need to be a seasoned advocate. Moreover\, the Coalition will host a prep meeting\, open to all who register\, to answer questions and go over what we are asking lawmakers to support. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Data Center Reform Coalition\n\n\n\nThe Data Center Reform Coalition is comprised of more than 50 environmental\, conservation\, historic preservation and climate advocacy groups\, we well as representatives from diverse communities and neighborhoods across the Commonwealth. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Jared Mummert\, PEC Senior Data Center Reform Campaign Coordinator\, at jmummert@pecva.org.

If you are interested in preserving the landscape that we enjoy today\, please consider a tax deductible contribution to the Fund when you register for this event. \n\n\n\nThe event is hosted by Margrete Stevens. A big thanks to staff from The Clifton Institute\, Smithsonian’s Virginia Working Landscapes and the Fauquier Education Farm for also partnering with us on this year’s event. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Montana Lanier Ruffner at mlanier@pecva.org or 540-677-0813. \n\n\n\nConservation at Bonny Brook Farm\n\n\n\nBronny Brook Farm’s ~200 acres are protected under a conservation easement held by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. Among other sustainable land management and restoration projects\, the farm participated in PEC’s Plantings for the Piedmont program in 2022. Volunteers helped plant 55 native trees and shrubs along a perennial stream\, including willow oak\, shumard oak\, pin oak\, swamp chestnut oak\, gray and silky dogwoods\, elderberry\, and serviceberry. Learn more. → \n\n\n\nPEC’s Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund\n\n\n\nPEC’s Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund has been successful in assisting with the protection of more than 12\,000 acres of privately-owned land in the Cedar Run watershed. It was established in 2003. The Fund is named in honor of Julian Scheer of Elmwood who\, with his wife Sue\, led many important conservation efforts in Fauquier County for four decades. Their work is today carried forward by Rick and Hilary Gerhardt\, Julian and Sue’s son-in-law and daughter. \n\n\n\nThe Fauquier Fund provides valuable outreach\, education\, and financial resources for landowners to explore land conservation options as well as ways to improve sound environmental stewardship of land and waterways. Such efforts may take the form of estate planning and the donation of conservation easements; land management supported by the Fund may include the planting of native trees and the protection of streams and ponds. \n\n\n\nIn recognizing that working farms form an important and traditional part of the way of life in Fauquier county\, the Fund collaborates with farmers and Fauquier County staff under the recently enhanced Purchase of Development Rights program to ensure that farms may be protected from future development through conservation easements. The Fund’s work in this area is especially geared towards assisting with initial expenses in the form of valuation and attorney’s fees. \n\n\n\nProtected by a Virginia Outdoors Foundation conservation easement in 2010\, Bonny Brook Farm is part of a 2\,500-acre cluster of permanently protected\, productive farms. Across Fauquier County\, almost 112\,500 acres of land are now conserved. \n\n\n\nUnder PEC auspices\, and with PEC staff assistance\, the Fauquier Fund hosts a number of community activities throughout the year\, including not only the Bluebell Walk but also conservation workshops and fundraising events. \n\n\n\nDonations make the Fund’s conservation work possible. If you are interested in preserving the landscape that we enjoy today\, please consider a tax deductible contribution to the Fund when you register for this event.

SUMMARY:Loudoun Coalition Groundwater Community Meeting - Purcellville
DESCRIPTION:In rural Loudoun\, property values\, businesses\, and living standards depend on reliable access to groundwater. But a recent study revealed a concerning trend in our local water supply. Since 2000\, water tables in many areas have dropped 10-40 feet. With the number of active wells nearly doubling since 1990—now totaling 19\,000—90% of our wells are within 550 feet of a neighbor’s. \n\n\n\nWe cannot simply “plug in” to a central system; hooking rural Loudoun to public water would cost billions and force rapid\, unwanted urbanization. The county needs to do more to ensure wells don’t go dry. \n\n\n\nJoin neighbors and friends at our upcoming community meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday\, April 6 at Woodgrove High School to learn more and get involved in protecting groundwater resources in Loudoun County. \n\n\n\nMultiple dates/locations\n\n\n\nThere are three dates and locations for this series of community meetings. SUMMARY:Guided Hike to the Piedmont Memorial Overlook
DESCRIPTION:A group taking in the view at PEC’s Piedmont Memorial Overlook property in Paris\, VA. Credit Hugh Kenny/PEC.\n\n\n\nCelebrate Earth Week and Arbor Day with a guided hike to a Treasured View! Join staff from The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) in partnership with Sky Meadows State Park for an unforgettable outdoor experience. \n\n\n\nThis guided hike to the Piedmont Memorial Overlook\, recently recognized as a “Treasured View” by Scenic Virginia\, will honor strategic partnerships in the outdoors with both park rangers and PEC staff as your guides. \n\n\n\nThis will be a strenuous hike of approximately 3 miles round trip\, with an elevation gain of 600 feet over the 1.5-mile ascent to the overlook. \n\n\n\n\nLearn more and register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s a patchwork of forest\, livestock pasture\, and mountainous fields that was actively farmed and heavily grazed by cattle from the late 18th century until the recent past. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, with funding from the USDA\, PEC began an extensive restoration effort on the 50-acre parcel. We first eliminated fescue and other non-native plants from the pasture and then seeded native grasses and wildflowers. The property now serves as an active demonstration site for landowners interested in seeing the outcomes of habitat restoration practices.  \n\n\n\nThe 16-acre native meadow is home to songbirds\, butterflies\, raptors\, bees and black bears. Native wildflower species provide forage for pollinators and habitat for grassland and shrubland birds. PEC manages the meadow using prescribed fire\, late winter mowing and invasive species monitoring.

SUMMARY:Arbor Day Tree Planting & Picnic at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Bring the family out to Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve in Loudoun County for a special Arbor Day event honoring Virginia’s 250th anniversary with the planting of a commemorative Liberty Tree – the first of its kind in the state of Virginia! \n\n\n\nStay afterward for a family-friendly picnic on the lawn with plenty of fun for all ages! \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the VA250 statewide celebration. No registration required. \n\n\n\nLearn more → \n\n\n\nWhat is a Liberty Tree? The Liberty Tree was a powerful symbol of colonial resistance in the American Revolution\, originating as a specific elm tree in Boston used by the Sons of Liberty for protests against British rule\, most famously against the Stamp Act. This historic tree became a beacon of hope to colonists and a symbol of American freedom. In an attempt to stymie these colonists\, the British destroyed Boston’s Liberty Tree. Suddenly\, patriots throughout the 13 colonies began to designate new Liberty Trees. Today\, planting a dedicated Liberty Tree promotes the value and benefits of trees to current and future generations while informing\, educating and inspiring youth with stories of their connection to historic “legacy” trees.

SUMMARY:Yoga at the Overlook
DESCRIPTION:People practicing yoga outdoors. Yoga Retreat In The Mountains” by WeTravel\, CC BY 2.0\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of yoga at the Piedmont Memorial Overlook! PEC’s Lindsey Loving will lead a 30- to 40-minute beginner-friendly yoga practice for attendees – all levels are welcome. Yoga is about quieting the mind in order to connect with our true selves and the universe. What better place to do that than the Piedmont Memorial Overlook at sunset\, with its panoramic views and serene natural surroundings? In this practice\, we will incorporate gentle movement\, standing poses and stretches\, helping to promote strength and flexibility in the body and the mind. After the practice\, there will be time to take in the beautiful views and take photos.  \n\n\n\nAbout your instructor: Lindsey Loving is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with nearly 300 hours of training and thousands of hours of practice. She received her yoga teaching certification in 2023 through the Yoga Alliance and specializes in Vinyasa yoga\, which emphasizes connecting breath with movement in a “flow” from one pose (or asana) to another. Lindsey is also a full-time member of the PEC staff and enjoys combining her two passions for yoga and spending time in nature. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: For this practice\, you will need to bring your own yoga mat (or a thick blanket or towel that is large enough to practice on) – mats will not be provided. If you have yoga props you use at home\, such as yoga blocks\, a strap\, etc.\, you are encouraged to bring them with you. As we will be practicing outside\, you may also want to bring a small towel or blanket to place under your knees for extra support. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and wear comfortable shoes.* Please check the weather forecast and come prepared as you normally would for spending time outdoors by bringing sunscreen\, bug spray\, a water bottle\, a jacket or warm layer\, and a hat and/or sunglasses as needed. \n\n\n\n* If you elect to do this practice barefoot\, we ask that you please wear shoes at all other times that you are not on your mat\, such as while walking around the overlook. \n\n\n\nThis event is an adults only class and is not suitable for pets. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited! In the event of inclement weather\, we will reschedule to the rain date.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains.
