DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay’s 20th Annual Chesapeake Watershed Forum is a watershed-wide event reaching over 400 restoration and protection practitioners to inspire and empower local action towards clean water. We share successful tools and techniques\, offer lessons and learnings from on-the-ground work\, build capacities of local organizations\, foster partnerships\, educate on new initiatives and emerging practices\, network with others\, and celebrate our successes. \n\n\n\n*PEC’s October Greenfield and Linnea Sherman will be speaking about opportunities for expanding the conservation toolbox. \n\n\n\nMore information → \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2025 theme is “Shaping the Future of Conservation with Human-Centered Approaches.”\n\n\n\nFor two decades\, the Chesapeake Watershed Forum has brought together partners to collaborate\, innovate\, and drive meaningful progress in restoring and protecting the shared waters of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. As we mark this milestone 20th anniversary\, we have an opportunity to reflect on the successes and challenges that have shaped our work and the lessons that will guide us forward. \n\n\n\n2025 is a pivotal year – both a moment to celebrate how far we have come and a chance to plan for what’s ahead. Planning for 2025 and Beyond efforts led by the Chesapeake Bay Program challenge us to think critically about the future of conservation and restoration efforts. Photo by Hugh Kenny/PEC.\n\n\n\nThe Data Center Reform Coalition is excited to announce our 2026 Lobby Day slated for Monday\, Feb. 9\, 2026. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we are urging state lawmakers to take action on the unchecked\, exponential growth of data centers in Virginia.\n\n\n\nThis event is your chance to lobby with fellow advocates in your district for a smarter development approach to data centers in our state.  \n\n\n\nBackground: Virginia is home to the world’s largest concentration of data centers in the world\, dwarfing all other global markets. Each of these data centers consumes as much power as a small city\, creating a huge increase in future electricity infrastructure needs\, and their continued\, unfettered growth will have a disastrous impact on ratepayers\, our communities\, and the environment. \n\n\n\nSeveral pieces of legislation have been introduced for the 2026 General Assembly session that advocate for a smarter development approach and embrace our four main pillars of reform: \n\n\n\n\nEnhanced Transparency\n\n\n\nState Oversight\n\n\n\nProtections for Families and Businesses\n\n\n\nIncentives for Efficiency\n\n\n\n\nWe believe we can get legislation in place this year to bring about a smarter digital future for our state. Help us spread the word in February! \n\n\n\nHow it works: You will be led in your meetings by a lobbying expert and joined by others in your district\, so there is no need to be a seasoned advocate. Please reserve your spot ahead of time. \n\n\n\n\nReserve Your Spot\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBackground:\n\n\n\nA rural historic district is a geographic area with a significant concentration of buildings\, structures\, roads and waterways\, cultural and historic landscapes and natural features\, which has been recognized for its historical significance by formal listing on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. \n\n\n\nThe Rapidan River – Clark Mountain Rural Historic District is a nearly 40\,000-acre historic landscape in Orange County and parts of Madison and Culpeper Counties known for its high concentration of historic resources dating from the prehistoric period through the 1930s. \n\n\n\nA historic district creates more awareness about a community’s unique cultural\, historic and natural assets\, which often leads to a greater effort to preserve that history for future generations. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund for a walk along the banks of Cedar Run. \n\n\n\nEach spring\, a spectacular display of thousands of bluebells appear on the banks of Cedar Run at Bonny Brook Farm. To celebrate this rite of spring\, Margrete Stevens and PEC staff\, together with representatives from several partner organizations\, will highlight the restoration work the Stevens have undertaken at Bonny Brook Farm to enhance wildlife habitat. \n\n\n\nThis family-friendly event is free and open to the public but space is limited. Registration is required on Eventbrite. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOutdoor clothing and boots are recommended. Please\, no pets. Note: The round trip walk to Cedar Run will be approximately one mile in length through fields. The leisurely walk will begin promptly after opening remarks. Among other sustainable land management and restoration projects\, the farm participated in PEC’s Plantings for the Piedmont program in 2022. Volunteers helped plant 55 native trees and shrubs along a perennial stream\, including willow oak\, shumard oak\, pin oak\, swamp chestnut oak\, gray and silky dogwoods\, elderberry\, and serviceberry. Learn more. → \n\n\n\nPEC’s Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund\n\n\n\nPEC’s Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund has been successful in assisting with the protection of more than 12\,000 acres of privately-owned land in the Cedar Run watershed. It was established in 2003. The Fund is named in honor of Julian Scheer of Elmwood who\, with his wife Sue\, led many important conservation efforts in Fauquier County for four decades. Their work is today carried forward by Rick and Hilary Gerhardt\, Julian and Sue’s son-in-law and daughter. \n\n\n\nThe Fauquier Fund provides valuable outreach\, education\, and financial resources for landowners to explore land conservation options as well as ways to improve sound environmental stewardship of land and waterways. Such efforts may take the form of estate planning and the donation of conservation easements; land management supported by the Fund may include the planting of native trees and the protection of streams and ponds. \n\n\n\nIn recognizing that working farms form an important and traditional part of the way of life in Fauquier county\, the Fund collaborates with farmers and Fauquier County staff under the recently enhanced Purchase of Development Rights program to ensure that farms may be protected from future development through conservation easements. The Fund’s work in this area is especially geared towards assisting with initial expenses in the form of valuation and attorney’s fees. \n\n\n\nProtected by a Virginia Outdoors Foundation conservation easement in 2010\, Bonny Brook Farm is part of a 2\,500-acre cluster of permanently protected\, productive farms. Across Fauquier County\, almost 112\,500 acres of land are now conserved.  \n\n\n\nUnder PEC auspices\, and with PEC staff assistance\, the Fauquier Fund hosts a number of community activities throughout the year\, including not only the Bluebell Walk but also conservation workshops and fundraising events. \n\n\n\nDonations make the Fund’s conservation work possible. Join fellow neighbors and friends at for The Health Costs of On-Site Power: A Q&A on the Vantage Data Center Air Quality Study to learn more about The Piedmont Environmental Council’s newly released air study on the Vantage VA2 data center (22435 Glenn Dr) and have an opportunity pose questions to the lead author of the study\, Michael Cork. \n\n\n\nThe independent analysis found emissions from the Vantage data center’s onsite power could cause $53 million–$99 million per year in health-related damages\, part of a growing public emergency. \n\n\n\nThis data center is the first of its kind in Loudoun to run 24/7 on its own onsite natural gas turbines\, less than 1\,000 feet from homes. Join staff from The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) in partnership with Sky Meadows State Park for an unforgettable outdoor experience.  \n\n\n\nThis guided hike to the Piedmont Memorial Overlook\, recently recognized as a “Treasured View” by Scenic Virginia\, will honor strategic partnerships in the outdoors with both park rangers and PEC staff as your guides. \n\n\n\nThis will be a strenuous hike of approximately 3 miles round trip\, with an elevation gain of 600 feet over the 1.5-mile ascent to the overlook. \n\n\n\n\nLearn more and register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s a patchwork of forest\, livestock pasture\, and mountainous fields that was actively farmed and heavily grazed by cattle from the late 18th century until the recent past. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, with funding from the USDA\, PEC began an extensive restoration effort on the 50-acre parcel. We first eliminated fescue and other non-native plants from the pasture and then seeded native grasses and wildflowers. The property now serves as an active demonstration site for landowners interested in seeing the outcomes of habitat restoration practices.  \n\n\n\nThe 16-acre native meadow is home to songbirds\, butterflies\, raptors\, bees and black bears. Native wildflower species provide forage for pollinators and habitat for grassland and shrubland birds. PEC manages the meadow using prescribed fire\, late winter mowing and invasive species monitoring.

This historic tree became a beacon of hope to colonists and a symbol of American freedom. In an attempt to stymie these colonists\, the British destroyed Boston’s Liberty Tree. Suddenly\, patriots throughout the 13 colonies began to designate new Liberty Trees. Today\, planting a dedicated Liberty Tree promotes the value and benefits of trees to current and future generations while informing\, educating and inspiring youth with stories of their connection to historic “legacy” trees.

DESCRIPTION:Join The Piedmont Environmental Council and Piedmont Virginia Bird Club\, for a morning birding walk through Whisper Hill Farm. This time of year\, we’ll likely be able to witness the bobolink\, a rarely-seen grassland bird\, as they pass through Whisper Hill Farm on their migration to Northern Virginia for nesting. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to become acquainted with grassland birds of all kinds and learn what we can all do to protect them. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome. The ~1 mile walk will traverse flat terrain\, with occasional uneven ground through the fields of active farmland. Participants should be comfortable moving at a slow pace and stopping frequently to watch birds. The property is accessible by a well-maintained gravel road.  \n\n\n\nMake sure to bring water\, comfortable close-toed shoes and binoculars (if you have them)! \n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but registration is required.
