SUMMARY:The Book of Wilding—a Practical Guide to Rewilding Big and Small with Isabella Tree
DESCRIPTION:Join The Piedmont Environmental Council\, The Garden Conservancy and the Oak Spring Garden Foundation at the Middleburg Community Center for a talk by award-winning journalist and author Isabella Tree. This event is part of The Garden Conservancy’s Fall 2023 National Speaking Tour. You can pre-order her new book\, The Book of Wilding—a Practical Guide to Rewilding Big and Small\, which will be released on September 26\, 2023. \n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission Tickets ($55) →\n\n\n\nPEC Member Tickets ($45) →\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture\n\n\n\nThe enormity of climate change and biodiversity loss can leave us feeling overwhelmed. How can an individual ever make a difference? Isabella Tree knows firsthand how spectacularly nature can bounce back if you give it the chance. And what comes is not just wildlife in super-abundance\, but also solutions to the other environmental crises we face. This is the subject of Isabella Tree’s lecture and newest publication\, The Book of Wilding\, a handbook that guides how we can all help restore nature. It is ambitious\, visionary\, and pragmatic. The book has grown out of Isabella’s mission to help rewild Britain\, Europe\, and the rest of the world by sharing knowledge from her pioneering project in Sussex.Rewilding is a spectrum. Whether we have a garden\, a pond\, or a window box\, there is no space too small. It is learning how to contribute to a living landscape\, the life-support system that will save our planet from calamity and deliver us a prosperous and sustainable future. Deeply researched and beautifully illustrated\, Isabella’s lecture explains how every one of us can play a part in rewilding our world. It is both a practical guide and a call to action. Above all\, it is a manifesto of hope. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nCourtesy of Anthony Cullen\n\n\n\nIsabella Tree is an award-winning journalist and author of five books. Her first best-selling book\, Wilding tells the story of the daring wildlife experiment she began in 2000: rewilding her and her husband Sir Charlie Burrell’s 3\,500 acres of unprofitable farmland at Knepp Estate in West Sussex\, UK. In less than twenty years their degraded land has become a functioning ecosystem again\, wildlife has rocketed\, and numerous endangered species have made Knepp their home. What has happened at Knepp challenges conventional ideas about nature\, wildlife\, and how we manage and envisage our land. It reveals the potential for the landscapes of the future. Isabella also writes for the Guardian\, National Geographic Magazine\, and Granta. \n\n\n\nTickets can be purchased on The Garden Conservancy’s website: \n\n\n\n$55 General →$45 PEC Members →

SUMMARY:Sources of Conservation Funding (free workshop and social)
DESCRIPTION:Cattle using stream crossing courtesy John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District; Tractor by Bruce Jones; Fauquier farmland aerial by Will Parsons\, Chesapeake Bay Program.\n\n\n\nJoin John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District\, Natural Resources Conservation Service\, Fauquier County’s Conservation Easement Program\, and The Piedmont Environmental Council for a workshop to explore tools and sources of funding for conservation easements and land management. \n\n\n\nThe event is informal and designed for neighbors to learn from each other’s experiences and engage with the presenters. Landowners will share their experience working with the various programs to protect their farms with a conservation easement – and the finances involved in the transaction – and implementation of agricultural cost-share practices to improve soil health and water quality. Participants will have ample time to engage with organizations and leave with potential next steps for their properties. \n\n\n\nThe event is free and open to the public. While this event is in Fauquier County\, much of the information is relevant to other geographies and all are welcome to attend. Pre-registration is requested but not required. \n\n\n\n\nRegister →\n\n\n\n\nHeavy appetizers and nonalcoholic beverages will be provided. Attendees are welcome to purchase other beverages from our hosts Powers Farm & Brewery\, and a food truck will be present! They’ll be open until 8 p.m. \n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n6 p.m.: Check-in\n\n\n\n6:15 – 7:30 p.m.: Presentations\n\n\n\n\nCo-presenters\n\n\n\nJohn Marshall Soil & Water Conservation District – Agricultural cost-share programs to improve soil health and water quality\, including livestock exclusion fencing\, alternative watering systems\, riparian buffer plantings\, nutrient management projects\, and more. \n\n\n\nSoil & Water Conservation Districts provide technical assistance and financial incentives to assist with the installation of approved conservation practices. Cost-share can range from 75% up to 100% of allowable costs for some practices. \n\n\n\nNatural Resources Conservation Service – Agricultural\, wildlife\, and pollinator conservation programs that help people help the land by providing assistance to develop a farm plan\, technical assistance in design and installation of conservation practices\, and financial assistance to turn the plan into action. \n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Environmental Council – Introduction to conservation easements. A conservation easement is a voluntary legal agreement between a landowner and a conservation organization designed to protect the scenic open space\, wildlife habitat and/or forest and agricultural resources on private property. A donation of a conservation easement may provide for federal income tax deduction\, Virginia state income tax credit\, estate tax reduction\, and reduced real estate taxes. \n\n\n\nPEC will highlight our Planting for the Piedmont Program\, which provides free trees and shrubs along riparian areas (waterways including rivers\, streams\, and wetlands)\, technical assistance\, and labor for improved water quality. \n\n\n\nFauquier County Department of Agricultural Development – Fauquier County’s Purchase of Development Rights Program is a voluntary program that pays landowners to protect the farmland and natural resource assets of their property. This program allows landowners to enter into agreements to sell the development potential of qualifying property to the County while maintaining the right to continue to own and use the property. The purpose of the PDR Program is to protect farmland and retain the agricultural industry’s critical mass\, in particular\, farm parcels that are economically viable operations. \n\n\n\nLandowner testimonials\, question & answer session\, socialize with neighbors and presenters. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is made possible by the generous co-presenters and The Piedmont Environmental Council’s Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund. \n\n\n\nPEC’s Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund was established in 2003 to protect land with important natural\, historic\, scenic and agricultural resources in Fauquier County. The Fund provides direct funding for environmental stewardship on working farmland\, technical support for easement donations\, and educational workshops on conservation and management options. Learn more about the Julian W. Scheer Fauquier Land Conservation Fund and donate here. \n\n\n\nFor questions about this event\, please reach out to Maggi Blomstrom\, mblomstrom@pecva.org\, 540-347-2334 ext. 7067. \n\n\n\nPhoto credits: Cattle using stream crossing courtesy John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District; Tractor by Bruce Jones; Fauquier farmland aerial by Will Parsons\, Chesapeake Bay Program.

SUMMARY:"These Are Not Your Grandpa's Quail": Modern Bobwhite Quail Habitat Management
DESCRIPTION:Bob-WHITE! Bob-WHITE! \n\n\n\nOn July 19\, we will talk about a bird whose call is a beloved sound for many of us. The northern bobwhite aka bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) is the only quail native to eastern North America. We hear its call much less often now because of a steep decline in the bobwhite quail population\, mostly due to habitat loss. \n\n\n\nMarc Puckett (Small Game Projects Leader and Private Lands Biologist Manager for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources) will discuss the bobwhite quail and how to manage its habitat in multiple scenarios so that these birds can thrive. \n\n\n\nThe audience will have the opportunity to ask questions during the webinar. You can submit your questions beforehand (during registration) for Marc\, or ask them live. \n\n\n\nThere will be a quick update on PRISM activities at the beginning of the meeting. \n\n\n\nBlue Ridge PRISM’s Summer Meeting is a free\, online event. Those who register will receive a copy of the recording. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRegister: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/640679949977

SUMMARY:Inspiring Conservation: PEC Annual Meeting featuring Dr. Mamie Parker
DESCRIPTION:Come join PEC for our 2023 Annual Meeting at Meadowkirk\, a state-of-the-art meeting facility nestled in picturesque Middleburg\, Loudoun County! The day will begin with a brief welcome and reflection on PEC’s past\, present\, and future\, followed by a keynote address from former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Head of Fisheries and VA Department of Wildlife Resources Commissioner\, Dr. Maime Parker. \n\n\n\nAt noon\, we will break for a community lunch and fellowship with our keynote speaker\, workshop leaders\, and PEC staff and members. After lunch\, we hope you’ll join PEC staff for an informative workshop covering one of three unique topics. The event will conclude at 2:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nRSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/inspiring-conservation-pec-annual-meeting-featuring-dr-mamie-parker-tickets-615046609967 \n\n\n\nKeynote Speaker: Dr. Mamie Parker\n\n\n\nDr. Mamie Parker spent her career as a fish and wildlife biologist and senior executive service member in the federal government and made history serving as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s first African American Head of Fisheries and Regional Director of the 13 Northeastern states. Additionally\, after being appointed by the Governor of Virginia\, she was elected as the first Black chair of the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resource Commission\, where she led the commission in changing the name of the agency. \n\n\n\nParker is well known for her public speaking throughout the environmental community across the country and around the world. She is the chair of the Student Conservation Association and serves on the Board of Directors of Brown Advisory\, Center for Large Landscape Conservation\, The Nature Conservancy-Virginia Chapter\, Marstel-Day Consulting\, Duke University NSOE\, the National Wildlife Federation\, the Chesapeake Conservancy and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\nA choice of three workshops will begin at 1:00 p.m. The workshops will be simultaneous\, please choose the one you think you’d like to attend upon checkout (to give us an idea of how many people are interested in each one). You can always change your mind when you’re there! \n\n\n\nConservation and Sustainability in the Potomac Watershed\n\n\n\nPEC is committed to a set of conservation and community engagement strategies that have helped make the region a model for sustainable growth and protection of natural\, agricultural and historic resources. Meet PEC’s Loudoun\, Fauquier\, and Clarke field teams and hear about our work empowering residents to effect positive change in their communities. Learn about pressing local land use issues\, conservation and restoration opportunities\, the Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows\, and ways you can get involved! \n\n\n\nStemming the Tide of Grassland Bird Decline\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Environmental Council and the Smithsonian’s Virginia Working Landscapes launched the Virginia Grassland Bird Initiative (VGBI) to address grassland bird declines on working lands in the Virginia Piedmont. PEC’s Wildlife Habitat Restoration Coordinator October Greenfield will introduce this new partnership and our collaborative work with producers to restore grassland bird habitat\, improve the resiliency of working landscapes and positively impact the livelihoods that depend upon those lands. \n\n\n\nData Centers & Virginia’s Clean Energy Future\n\n\n\nThe Virginia Clean Economy Act of 2020 mandates that Dominion produce 100% of its energy from renewable sources by the year 2045. Understanding the importance of this goal and addressing the climate challenges before us\, PEC staff will share how our work encourages policies\, zoning\, and individual actions that help reduce power demand and emissions\, capture and sequester carbon in our forests and soils\, and promote distributed renewable energy options. To add to the challenge\, the proliferation of high energy use data centers is shifting the goalpost and making the VCEA goals all that much more difficult to meet. While the growth of data centers within the major data center hub of northern Virginia continues at a fast pace\, communities throughout Virginia are now starting to see more proposals for data centers. \n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n9:30 a.m. | Check-in/Meet & Greet \n\n\n\n10:00 a.m. | Welcome & PEC Update from John McCarthy\, Senior Advisor & Director of Strategic Partnerships \n\n\n\n10:30 a.m. | Keynote Address by Dr. Maime Parker: “The Passion\, Inspiration\, and Excellence (PIE) in Collaboration” \n\n\n\n12:00 p.m. | Community Lunch with Local Ingredients (sponsored by Country Chevy) \n\n\n\n1:00 p.m. | Workshops \n\n\n\n2:30 p.m. | Depart
