SUMMARY:Webinar: The Fight to Stop Dominion's Attack on Small-Scale Solar
DESCRIPTION:Dominion Energy is trying to pass a proposal that would severely limit a Virginia policy called net metering. \n\n\n\nWith net metering\, solar owners receive a monthly credit on their bill for energy their solar panels produce. The excess\, unused energy is sent to the grid. You share energy with your neighbors\,  and your utility rewards you with credit that can pay off future bills. Dominion wants to take that away. \n\n\n\nLearn the details of Dominion’s proposal\, as well as what you can do to stop it from passing in this webinar hosted by Solar United Neighbors. PEC’s Energy & Climate Policy Advisor\, Ashish Kapoor\, will speak about our involvement in the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) case about net metering as well as our recently commissioned report Value of Distributed Solar in Virginia: A Framework for Fair Net-Metering Compensation. \n\n\n\nTopics covered in this webinar: \n\n\n\n\nExamine Dominion’s proposal to weaken Net Metering (NEM)\n\n\n\nOutline NEM’s wide-ranging energy and social benefits\n\n\n\nSynthesize findings from a new PEC-commissioned Dunsky report that analyzes the value of solar in Virginia\n\n\n\nShare ways to join the fight to protect NEM\n\n\n\n\nSolar advocates recently defeated Appalachian Power Company’s attempt to cut net metering . Now\, it’s time to protect Virginians in Dominion territory. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for this free webinar

The land was actively farmed from the late 18th century until the recent past\, and was heavily grazed by cattle. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, PEC began an extensive restoration effort on the 50-acre parcel with funding from the USDA\, first eliminating fescue and other non-native plants from the pasture\, and then seeding native grasses and wildflowers. The property now serves as an active demonstration site for landowners who are interested in viewing habitat restoration practices. \n\n\n\nThe 15+ acre native meadow is home to songbirds\, butterflies\, raptors\, bees and black bears. It was planted with 16 native wildflower species that provide forage for pollinators and habitat for grassland and shrubland birds. PEC manages the meadow using prescribed fire\, late winter mowing\, and invasive species monitoring.

SUMMARY:Chesapeake Watershed Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay’s 20th Annual Chesapeake Watershed Forum is a watershed-wide event reaching over 400 restoration and protection practitioners to inspire and empower local action towards clean water. We share successful tools and techniques\, offer lessons and learnings from on-the-ground work\, build capacities of local organizations\, foster partnerships\, educate on new initiatives and emerging practices\, network with others\, and celebrate our successes. \n\n\n\n*PEC’s October Greenfield and Linnea Sherman will be speaking about opportunities for expanding the conservation toolbox. \n\n\n\nMore information → \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2025 theme is “Shaping the Future of Conservation with Human-Centered Approaches.”\n\n\n\nFor two decades\, the Chesapeake Watershed Forum has brought together partners to collaborate\, innovate\, and drive meaningful progress in restoring and protecting the shared waters of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. As we mark this milestone 20th anniversary\, we have an opportunity to reflect on the successes and challenges that have shaped our work and the lessons that will guide us forward. \n\n\n\n2025 is a pivotal year – both a moment to celebrate how far we have come and a chance to plan for what’s ahead. Planning for 2025 and Beyond efforts led by the Chesapeake Bay Program challenge us to think critically about the future of conservation and restoration efforts. While uncertainties exist\, by embracing a mindset of resilience and adaptability\, we can continue building a strong foundation for the next generation of conservationists in our region. \n\n\n\nThis year’s theme centers on human-centered approaches – ensuring that the needs\, well-being\, and aspirations of people remain at the core of our work. By prioritizing trust and collaborative decision-making\, we create impactful solutions and longstanding outcomes. Our ability to navigate change isn’t just about responding to external forces; it’s about proactively shaping a future that meets the needs and collective futures for all of us.

SUMMARY:Data Center Reform Lobby Day
DESCRIPTION:PEC staff joined a coalition of organizations in Richmond to demonstrate support for data center reform\, February 2023. Photo by Hugh Kenny/PEC.\n\n\n\nThe Data Center Reform Coalition is excited to announce our 2026 Lobby Day slated for Monday\, Feb. 9\, 2026. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we are urging state lawmakers to take action on the unchecked\, exponential growth of data centers in Virginia.\n\n\n\nThis event is your chance to lobby with fellow advocates in your district for a smarter development approach to data centers in our state. \n\n\n\nBackground: Virginia is home to the world’s largest concentration of data centers in the world\, dwarfing all other global markets. Each of these data centers consumes as much power as a small city\, creating a huge increase in future electricity infrastructure needs\, and their continued\, unfettered growth will have a disastrous impact on ratepayers\, our communities\, and the environment. \n\n\n\nSeveral pieces of legislation have been introduced for the 2026 General Assembly session that advocate for a smarter development approach and embrace our four main pillars of reform: \n\n\n\n\nEnhanced Transparency\n\n\n\nState Oversight\n\n\n\nProtections for Families and Businesses\n\n\n\nIncentives for Efficiency\n\n\n\n\nWe believe we can get legislation in place this year to bring about a smarter digital future for our state. Help us spread the word in February! \n\n\n\nHow it works: You will be led in your meetings by a lobbying expert and joined by others in your district\, so there is no need to be a seasoned advocate. Moreover\, the Coalition will host a prep meeting\, open to all who register\, to answer questions and go over what we are asking lawmakers to support. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Data Center Reform Coalition\n\n\n\nThe Data Center Reform Coalition is comprised of more than 50 environmental\, conservation\, historic preservation and climate advocacy groups\, we well as representatives from diverse communities and neighborhoods across the Commonwealth. \n\n\n\nQuestions?
