SUMMARY:Guided Hike to the Piedmont Memorial Overlook
DESCRIPTION:A group taking in the view at PEC’s Piedmont Memorial Overlook property in Paris\, VA. Credit Hugh Kenny/PEC.\n\n\n\nCelebrate Earth Week and Arbor Day with a guided hike to a Treasured View! Join staff from The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) in partnership with Sky Meadows State Park for an unforgettable outdoor experience. \n\n\n\nThis guided hike to the Piedmont Memorial Overlook\, recently recognized as a “Treasured View” by Scenic Virginia\, will honor strategic partnerships in the outdoors with both park rangers and PEC staff as your guides. \n\n\n\nThis will be a strenuous hike of approximately 3 miles round trip\, with an elevation gain of 600 feet over the 1.5-mile ascent to the overlook. \n\n\n\n\nLearn more and register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s a patchwork of forest\, livestock pasture\, and mountainous fields that was actively farmed and heavily grazed by cattle from the late 18th century until the recent past. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, with funding from the USDA\, PEC began an extensive restoration effort on the 50-acre parcel. We first eliminated fescue and other non-native plants from the pasture and then seeded native grasses and wildflowers. The property now serves as an active demonstration site for landowners interested in seeing the outcomes of habitat restoration practices.  \n\n\n\nThe 16-acre native meadow is home to songbirds\, butterflies\, raptors\, bees and black bears. Native wildflower species provide forage for pollinators and habitat for grassland and shrubland birds. PEC manages the meadow using prescribed fire\, late winter mowing and invasive species monitoring.

SUMMARY:Arbor Day Tree Planting & Picnic at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Bring the family out to Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve in Loudoun County for a special Arbor Day event honoring Virginia’s 250th anniversary with the planting of a commemorative Liberty Tree – the first of its kind in the state of Virginia! \n\n\n\nStay afterward for a family-friendly picnic on the lawn with plenty of fun for all ages! \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the VA250 statewide celebration. No registration required. \n\n\n\nLearn more → \n\n\n\nWhat is a Liberty Tree? The Liberty Tree was a powerful symbol of colonial resistance in the American Revolution\, originating as a specific elm tree in Boston used by the Sons of Liberty for protests against British rule\, most famously against the Stamp Act. This historic tree became a beacon of hope to colonists and a symbol of American freedom. In an attempt to stymie these colonists\, the British destroyed Boston’s Liberty Tree. Suddenly\, patriots throughout the 13 colonies began to designate new Liberty Trees. Today\, planting a dedicated Liberty Tree promotes the value and benefits of trees to current and future generations while informing\, educating and inspiring youth with stories of their connection to historic “legacy” trees.

SUMMARY:Yoga at the Overlook
DESCRIPTION:People practicing yoga outdoors. Yoga Retreat In The Mountains” by WeTravel\, CC BY 2.0\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of yoga at the Piedmont Memorial Overlook! PEC’s Lindsey Loving will lead a 30- to 40-minute beginner-friendly yoga practice for attendees – all levels are welcome. Yoga is about quieting the mind in order to connect with our true selves and the universe. What better place to do that than the Piedmont Memorial Overlook at sunset\, with its panoramic views and serene natural surroundings? In this practice\, we will incorporate gentle movement\, standing poses and stretches\, helping to promote strength and flexibility in the body and the mind. After the practice\, there will be time to take in the beautiful views and take photos.  \n\n\n\nAbout your instructor: Lindsey Loving is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with nearly 300 hours of training and thousands of hours of practice. She received her yoga teaching certification in 2023 through the Yoga Alliance and specializes in Vinyasa yoga\, which emphasizes connecting breath with movement in a “flow” from one pose (or asana) to another. Lindsey is also a full-time member of the PEC staff and enjoys combining her two passions for yoga and spending time in nature. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: For this practice\, you will need to bring your own yoga mat (or a thick blanket or towel that is large enough to practice on) – mats will not be provided. If you have yoga props you use at home\, such as yoga blocks\, a strap\, etc.\, you are encouraged to bring them with you. As we will be practicing outside\, you may also want to bring a small towel or blanket to place under your knees for extra support. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and wear comfortable shoes.* Please check the weather forecast and come prepared as you normally would for spending time outdoors by bringing sunscreen\, bug spray\, a water bottle\, a jacket or warm layer\, and a hat and/or sunglasses as needed. \n\n\n\n* If you elect to do this practice barefoot\, we ask that you please wear shoes at all other times that you are not on your mat\, such as while walking around the overlook. \n\n\n\nThis event is an adults only class and is not suitable for pets. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited! In the event of inclement weather\, we will reschedule to the rain date.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains.
