DESCRIPTION:Laissez les bons temps rouler with a low-stress ride through the streets of Charlottesville\, followed by a (bikes optional) Karnival Krewe procession! Deck out your bike (and yourself) with Mardi Gras flair\, bright colors\, and music! The progressive celebration will finish at Champion Brewing Company with music by Baby Jo’s. \n\n\n\nCredit Hannah Pearce\n\n\n\nInvite your friends and make some new ones! Whether you’re an experienced bicyclist or not\, come out and enjoy a fun evening. It’s free and open to all. \n\n\n\nWe’ll gather at Quality Pie (309 Avon Street\, Charlottesville\, VA 22902) starting at 4:30 p.m. The ride itself will begin at 5:30 p.m.\, follow bike lanes and quiet neighborhood streets wherever possible. We will stop and take at least one break in a park along the way. The ride will return to Quality Pie\, at which point we will join a (bikes optional) procession (starting at 6:30 p.m.) through the streets of Belmont\, ending at Champion Brewing Company\, where there will be live music from Baby Jo’s. \n\n\n\nStaff and volunteers from Community Bikes and the Piedmont Environmental Council will be on-hand to help. Stop by a bit early if you’d like to help – or need help – with decorations/repairs. DESCRIPTION:PEC is honored to return to the Oak Spring Garden Foundation’s Mellon Runway to celebrate our 50th anniversary and unveil our vision for the future as outlined in a new strategic plan. As a unique attraction for the 50th-anniversary celebration\, world-renowned visual artist Elizabeth Turk and her team will lead an interactive social sculpture art project envisioned exclusively for PEC. The performances are timed to coincide with sunset\, when 500 lit umbrellas symbolizing flora and fauna of the Piedmont\, its pollinators and threats\, open up as guests sway to the Bluegrass sounds of Grammy-nominated Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen. This living sculpture will follow a performance by world-class dancer and Orange County local Demetia Hopkins\, accompanied by music created specially for the evening by Dr. Dena Jennings. The evening will culminate with a local farm-to-fork dinner under the stars. It would be the largest land rezoning in Orange County history and could raise taxes for county residents and cause unnecessary harm to natural and historic resources for years to come. \n\n\n\nIn addition to concerns about taxes\, infrastructure (water and sewer)\, traffic\, and habitat fragmentation\, Wilderness Crossing is also the site of numerous unreclaimed gold mines—essentially\, mines that have never been closed off and cleaned up of contaminants such as mercury\, arsenic\, cadmium and lead. The largest mine on the property\, called the Vaucluse mine\, has been documented by state inspectors as the site of extreme mercury contamination. Since it was never cleaned up\, the tailings pit is likely still leaching toxic chemicals into Shotgun Hill Branch today and is an expected source of contamination in Wilderness Run\, and ultimately\, the Rapidan and Rappahannock rivers. PEC recommends that Orange County seriously consider how the toxic legacy of gold mining at this location could impact the health\, safety and welfare of future residents and downstream communities. \n\n\n\nPEC and the Wilderness Battlefield Coalition has been following the Wilderness Crossing proposal since the application was first submitted by developer KEG Associates III in March of 2021. \n\n\n\nPlease contact Don McCown at dmccown@pecva.org if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Getting Around in Charlottesville: Results from the Move2HealthEquity Community Mobility Survey
DESCRIPTION:How do people get around in Charlottesville? Why don’t people walk\, bike or use transit more often? What can we do about transportation in our area? Move2Health Equity’s neighborhood-based community survey provides new insight into these questions. \n\n\n\nJoin the meeting at tinyurl.com/mobilityreport. \n\n\n\n428 people answered 15 questions in this 2021 survey about how they get around\, how they would like to get around\, what barriers they face and what solutions they would propose. The survey also asked residents how Covid-19 affected their transportation patterns. \n\n\n\nPeter Krebs\, of The Piedmont Environmental Council\, will present the survey’s primary findings and its implications. Other members of Move2Health Equity’s Active Communities team will also be present to offer their perspectives and suggested next steps as well. The presentation will last approximately 30 minutes\, followed by discussion. \n\n\n\nThe release of a 100-page report will correspond with this meeting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Move2Health Equity Coalition promotes healthy eating and active lifestyles for all community members. The coalition works through a Collective Impact Model in which independent member organizations combine resources to make a difference in areas where their missions overlap. Move2Health has four workgroups that address core priorities: Access to Healthcare\, Healthy Spaces\, Active Communities and Healthy Food Systems. \n\n\n\nFor 50 years\, The Piedmont Environmental Council has worked to promote compact\, livable cities\, surrounded by distinctly rural lands where farms\, forests\, and natural systems predominate. SUMMARY:Loudoun Community Meeting: Data Centers & Diesel Generators
DESCRIPTION:Join PEC for an informational session to learn about the power usage of local data centers\, the generators they operate in and around the Loudoun community\, and the anticipated air quality variance likely to be issued by the Department of Environmental Quality for this summer. \n\n\n\nLoudoun County is the data center capital of the world\, hosting 70% of the world’s internet traffic in Ashburn’s Data Center Alley. With these data centers come over 4\,000 commercial-sized on-site diesel generators\, utilized for back-up power when the grid experiences high stress\, such as in the summer months. \n\n\n\nDiesel generators emit relatively high levels of nitrogen oxides\, carbon monoxide\, particulate matter and sulfur\, all of which have environmental and human health implications. \n\n\n\nBecause data centers have been proliferating rapidly in the past few years\, Dominion Energy has struggled to meet the massive electricity transmission needs. Just last year it announced it will be unable to provide enough electricity to data centers in Loudoun County through at least 2025. \n\n\n\nIn response\, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is proposing an order and local variance to allow data centers in Loudoun to operate their generators more frequently and for longer durations through July 2023. \n\n\n\nThis order is not only short-sighted in addressing the grid constraints\, but it has the potential to do real damage. Many of our schools\, sports fields\, playgrounds and homes are located near data center complexes\, and there is real potential for localized air pollution and regional greenhouse emissions with the increased use of these diesel generators. J Team Dairy is a member of Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative Association (MDVA)\, proud producers of Maola Local Dairies products. \n\n\n\nThe Elgin Family approaches dairy farming with a focus on animal care and sustainability. In addition to the upcoming tree planting\, the farm is working closely with MDVA\, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay\, and other environmental organizations to construct a bedded pack barn to reduce runoff to local streams and keep cows cool\, clean\, and dry.
