DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed to the rain date of Wednesday\, July 22\, 7:30 – 9 p.m. \n\n\n\nJoin The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) and Smithsonian’s Virginia Working Landscapes (VWL) for an evening exploring the bat diversity of Northern Virginia’s Piedmont region.  \n\n\n\nErin Shibley\, a wildlife biologist with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute\, will present an interactive program about the behavior and ecological benefits of Virginia’s bats. Attendees will learn about conservation challenges to North American bat populations and how everyone can get involved to help support bats on their own properties.  \n\n\n\nIllustration by Nick Garnhart/Smithsonian. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBat echolocation. Illustration by Nick Garnhart/Smithsonian.\n\n\n\nTowards the conclusion of the program\, we’ll listen for bats in the meadow by using handheld echolocation recording devices. \n\n\n\nThere will be a short walk over uneven terrain from the parking area to the Overlook. The program will also include a short walk through the meadow on mowed trails.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis event is free but registration is required on Eventbrite. Space is limited. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains that is a patchwork of forest\, livestock pasture\, and mountainous fields. The land was actively farmed from the late 18th century until the recent past\, and was heavily grazed by cattle. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, PEC began an extensive restoration effort on the 50-acre parcel with funding from the USDA\, first eliminating fescue and other non-native plants from the pasture\, and then seeding native grasses and wildflowers. The property now serves as an active demonstration site for landowners who are interested in viewing habitat restoration practices. \n\n\n\nThe 15+ acre native meadow is home to songbirds\, butterflies\, raptors\, bees and black bears. It was planted with 16 native wildflower species that provide forage for pollinators and habitat for grassland and shrubland birds. PEC manages the meadow using prescribed fire\, late winter mowing\, and invasive species monitoring. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nWeather: This event will be held rain or shine\, barring any adverse weather conditions. \n\n\n\nWhat to wear: We suggest wearing long pants and closed toed shoes! We will be walking through grass and tall vegetation. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Sturdy shoes\, bug spray\, a lawn chair and a flashlight or headlamp are recommended.  \n\n\n\n* Please note that there are no restroom facilities available at the Overlook.  \n\n\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Virginia Solar Social: Toast your Net Metering Win and Stop the NextEra Takeover
DESCRIPTION:Back in May\, the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) sided with Virginia ratepayers over Dominion Energy by rejecting the company’s attempt to gut its net metering program. Dominion’s proposal would have made distributed solar far less accessible\, reduced solar jobs\, and increased energy costs for all Virginia families. A record number of public comments and 50+ in-person testimonies helped convince the SCC to protect this valuable resource and maintain the fair\, full retail value of net metering for Dominion Energy customers over a 12-month annual cycle. \n\n\n\nEarly this summer\, NextEra\, America’s largest investor-owned utility\, announced a $67 billion deal to acquire Dominion Energy. In Florida\, NextEra’s has long been known to prioritize profits over all else—the utility has a troubling track record of backbreaking rate hikes\, political corruption\, surveillance and manipulation of press\, and the co-optation of civil rights organizations. This proposed acquisition jeopardizes many of Virginia’s promising regulatory and legislative wins this year and threatens the Commonwealth’s capacity to build long-term energy affordability\, democracy\, and equity. \n\n\n\nJoin Solar United Neighbors\, the Piedmont Environmental Council and other partners to celebrate our regulatory win and unpack what’s at stake with Dominion and NextEra’s proposed acquisition! \n\n\n\nRegister as soon as you can as space is limited!

SUMMARY:Rivanna River Roundup
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT \n\n\n\nThe Rivanna River Round-Up is an annual watershed-wide cleanup event hosted by the Rivanna Conservation Alliance. Since it began in 2020\, volunteers have removed hundreds of bags of trash and tires from our local streams\, trails\, and river through this event. Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers\, our regular cleanup sites are steadily improving and we are able to clean up new areas each year. This year’s event is on and around Saturday\, September 19th. Signups are open now! \n\n\n\nHOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED \n\n\n\nSign up for a Round-Up cleanup – Some cleanups will focus on trails or riverbanks\, while others will require volunteers to get in streams to gather trash. Site descriptions indicate whether waders or other special equipment might be needed\, and what RCA can provide. For all sites\, RCA will provide cleanup kits that include trash bags\, gloves\, first aid kits\, instructions\, hand sanitizer\, and other helpful supplies. More cleanup sites may be added as we continue to scout locations. For groups larger than 10\, please email info@rivannariver.org to set up a cleanup. \n\n\n\nSign up for a self-guided cleanup – If the cleanups are full\, or if there is a different site where you would like to conduct your own cleanup\, RCA would love to support you! We can offer basic cleanup supplies like trash bags\, gloves\, and hand sanitizer. Photo by Will Parson\, Chesapeake Bay Program.\n\n\n\nJoin Fauquier County Parks & Recreation at the Piedmont Memorial Overlook\, where PEC’s Wildlife Habitat Program Manager October Greenfield will lead a meadow walk to look for monarch butterflies migrating to their winter location in the Highlands of Mexico.  We’ll also be releasing monarchs hatched at the Parks and Rec office! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Piedmont Memorial Overlook\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains that is a patchwork of forest\, livestock pasture\, and mountainous fields. The land was actively farmed from the late 18th century until the recent past\, and was heavily grazed by cattle. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, PEC began an extensive restoration effort on the 50-acre parcel with funding from the USDA\, first eliminating fescue and other non-native plants from the pasture\, and then seeding native grasses and wildflowers. The property now serves as an active demonstration site for landowners who are interested in viewing habitat restoration practices. \n\n\n\nThe 15+ acre native meadow is home to songbirds\, butterflies\, raptors\, bees and black bears. It was planted with 16 native wildflower species that provide forage for pollinators and habitat for grassland and shrubland birds. PEC manages the meadow using prescribed fire\, late winter mowing\, and invasive species monitoring.

Then sign up for a tour of our agrivoltaics project! Located in Aldie\, VA\, PEC’s crop-based agrivoltaics project is the first of its kind in Virginia. We grow crops that are donated to hunger relief organizations in the same place we generate solar energy to power our farm utilities.  \n\n\n\nWe have monthly tours available\, usually on the first Wednesday of the month. Tours are about 90 minutes long and include an introduction to the concept of agrivoltaics\, a tour of our project\, and the opportunity to questions. Open tours are limited to 15 people\, please contact us in advance if you would like to schedule a larger group.  \n\n\n\nPlease be courteous to fellow participants by being on time and filling out our waiver in advance.
