This new program aims to help landowners in the Rappahannock River Region protect and enhance their forests\, working landscapes and urban tree canopy through carbon market resources and other conservation programs.  \n\n\n\nOctober 10 – Tree Planting Programs\n\n\n\nJoin Sarah Dishman\, Urban and Community Forestry Specialist\, to learn how Friends of the Rappahannock supports landowners interested in planting trees on their property. SUMMARY:Native Meadow Walk at the Piedmont Memorial Overlook
DESCRIPTION:Join The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) and Smithsonian’s Virginia Working Landscapes (VWL) for a native meadow walk at PEC’s Piedmont Memorial Overlook to learn about native plant identification\, pollinators\, songbirds and meadow management! \n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits adjacent to Sky Meadows State Park within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains that is a patchwork of forest\, livestock pasture\, and mountainous fields. The land was actively farmed from the late 18th century until the recent past\, and was heavily grazed by cattle. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, PEC began an extensive restoration effort on the 50-acre parcel with funding from the USDA\, first eliminating fescue and other non-native plants from the pasture\, and then seeding native grasses and wildflowers. The property now serves as an active demonstration site for landowners who are interested in viewing habitat restoration practices. \n\n\n\nThe 15+ acre native meadow is home to songbirds\, butterflies\, raptors\, bees and black bears. It was planted with 16 native wildflower species that provide forage for pollinators and habitat for grassland and shrubland birds. PEC manages the meadow using prescribed fire\, late winter mowing and invasive species monitoring. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nWeather policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, barring any adverse weather conditions. \n\n\n\nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable clothes you can move in! We will be walking through grass and tall vegetation. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Water bottle\, hat\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, camera and binoculars. \n\n\n\n* Please note that there are no restroom facilities available at the Overlook. Water and snacks will be available for attendees. \n\n\n\nFree Registration\n\n\n\nRSVP is required on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/native-meadow-walk-at-the-piedmont-memorial-overlook-0610-tickets-928062629307?aff=oddtdtcreator \n\n\n\nCredit Marco Sanchez/PEC

SUMMARY:Nature Night: Nocturnal Insects at the Piedmont Memorial Overlook
DESCRIPTION:Join The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) and The Clifton Institute for an evening discovering the diversity of moths and other nocturnal insects at PEC’s Piedmont Memorial Overlook! \n\n\n\nThis first-ever nighttime program at the overlook will start with an introduction to the property\, followed by a short hike through the native meadow before observing the interesting moths and other insects that have gathered on a backlit white sheet. This is an incredible chance to discover the magical world of nocturnal insects we rarely get to see\, and we encourage participants to submit their observations to iNaturalist! Registration is required. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Overlook\n\n\n\nThe Piedmont Memorial Overlook sits adjacent to Sky Meadows State Park within a large block of privately and publicly protected land along the Blue Ridge Mountains that is a patchwork of forest\, livestock pasture\, and mountainous fields. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Water bottle\, chair\, headlamp or flashlight\, bug spray\, camera\, curiosity\, a sense of adventure! Water and snacks will be available for attendees. \n\n\n\n* Please note that there are no restroom facilities available at the Overlook. \n\n\n\nDirections: We will email directions to registrants 1-2 days before the event \n\n\n\nQuestions? Please contact October Greenfield at ogreenfield@pecva.org.

SUMMARY:Five Mile Loop Advocacy Hike
DESCRIPTION:Note: Even though the event will meet in front of the YMCA\, it would be best to park at Charlottesville High School (here). There will be a large swim meet at the Y\, which always causes parking issues. \n\n\n\nIf 20 miles is too much Loop de Ville for you\, we have a much-shorter (but still serious) 5-mile option! \n\n\n\nWith leadership from PEC\, the Piedmont Mobility Alliance has been advocating for the creation of a five-mile greenway loop centered around McIntire Park\, where PEC is sponsoring a cheer zone for the annual Loop de VIlle Trailfest. This guided walk\, led by PEC’s Charlottesville / Albemarle Community Outreach Manager\, will showcase the route and celebrate a new right-of-way acquisition that will help close the loop. \n\n\n\nThe greenway is a work in progress so the walk will follow a combination of paved\, gravel and dirt trails. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk for about two hours. A group of local students to help lead the walk and share their unique perspectives. \n\n\n\nRoute Description: We’ll depart the cheer zone at about 9:30 a.m. with some of the Loop de Ville hikers\, passing in front of the YMCA\, through the woods along a partially paved trail that parallels the 250 bypass. We’ll part ways with the LDV hikers at Hydraulic and follow the Rivanna Trail downstream along Meadow Creek to the John Warner Parkway. We’ll follow the parkway via either a paved or unpaved option back to McIntire Park. We’ll turn at the Dogwood Vietnam Memorial\, pass the skate park and cross the pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks back to the YMCA. \n\n\n\nRoute Map: (RidewithGPS) | PDF The walk is free and you can either register on site or in advance. Either way\, you’re also invited to attend the free Loop de Ville After Party and Concert\, starting at 4:30 at Rivanna River Company.
