SUMMARY:Navigating Organizational Funding for Home Energy Upgrade Programs in Justice 40 Communities
DESCRIPTION:The federal government is releasing historic amounts of funding to advance home energy upgrades in the United States right now\, with many specifically dedicated to delivering energy savings\, comfort\, and health benefits to Justice 40 communities. Many of these funding opportunities come with difficult applications and complicated requirements due within short timelines. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a three-hour workshop to hear actionable advice on the nuts and bolts of applying for Inflation Reduction Act and bipartisan infrastructure law grants\, prizes\, and technical assistance. Participants will hear from municipal staff and community leaders about their experiences applying for federal grants ranging from $10\,000 to $250\,000\,000. Industry experts will detail best practices for finding federal opportunities that match participant priorities and completing a successful application. \n\n\n\nRegister: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcqdOuorzwqG9BAFSzDh7FCMqZZhbP_4r94#/registration \n\n\n\nThe workshop will culminate in a breakout room session where participants will work through a sample funding opportunity notice\, creating a sample project plan and drafting an outline to complete a successful federal grant application. \n\n\n\nThis is the first workshop in a series organized by EPA and the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s R2E2 and is designed to support community-based organizations\, small businesses\, and local governments in creating equitable efficiency and electrification home upgrade programs.

SUMMARY:Special Announcement on Wilderness Battlefield
DESCRIPTION:In April 2023\, the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved an application to rezone more than 2\,600 acres of fields and forest across from Wilderness Battlefield for the proposed “Wilderness Crossing” development. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis massive\, industrial development poses a dire threat to the historic\, natural and cultural resources of the surrounding area\, including the nationally significant Wilderness and Chancellorsville battlefields\, additional lands that are part of a Congressionally designated battlefield study area\, and the entire Route 3 corridor\, the historic trade route from the Port of Fredericksburg to Culpeper and other parts of Virginia. \n\n\n\nIn the face of this looming\, incongruous development\, on Wednesday\, May 1\, PEC and other members of the Wilderness Battlefield Coalition will join the National Trust for Historic Preservation for a special announcement about efforts to raise awareness about threats facing Wilderness Battlefield. \n\n\n\nThis event is open to the public\, is free\, and will be held rain or shine. On May 1\, follow the signs for parking. If you can join us\, please email me at dmccown@pecva.org. An RSVP isn’t required but it is helpful to know how many people to expect. Wilderness Run Vineyards opens to the public at 11 a.m.

SUMMARY:Community Meeting on Data Centers and Transmission Lines in Bealeton
DESCRIPTION:Join The Piedmont Environmental Council and our partners in local community groups\, Citizens for Fauquier County\, Protect Catlett and Protect Fauquier\, for a community meeting about proposed data centers and transmission lines in southern Fauquier County and surrounding areas. \n\n\n\nThis meeting will take place on Monday\, April 29 from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at Liberty High School (auditorium) in Bealeton. Register → \n\n\n\nBackground\n\n\n\nIn December of last year\, PJM\, the organization that coordinates electricity transmission in 13 states and D.C.\, finalized its preferred options for transmission line routes including one major upgrade of an existing line running through Fauquier\, Prince William and Loudoun counties. Other routes impacting the area that were previously considered are anticipated to be considered again in the future. These expansion projects are being driven by the enormous amount of electricity demand coming from the explosion of data centers in Northern Virginia. \n\n\n\nTo add to the problem\, data center companies are increasingly looking for land to develop farther away from current data center hubs. Alongside recently approved data centers in nearby Culpeper and Prince William counties\, numerous proposals have emerged in Southern Fauquier\, posing additional risks to local communities and the environment. We’ll talk about some of these projects and provide you with information to help you weigh in with your elected officials. \n\n\n\nMapping the issue\n\n\n\nPEC’s interactive web map details some of the regional transmission proposals under consideration due to data center demand growth. \n\n\n\nView the web map full screen at pecva.org/transmissionmap. This map was updated on October 31\, 2023 to reflect PJM’s most recent set of proposals. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nDoors open at 6 p.m. The event will start with a few short presentations by the host organizations and include time for folks to ask questions and learn about actions they can take. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited. Please register to guarantee your spot. \n\n\n\nQuestions?\n\n\n\nContact Kevin Kask at kkask@pecva.org. \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Front Royal Earth Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join local environmental and conservation organizations in Front Royal on Sunday\, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for an Earth Day celebration inspired by the iconic Lone Pine overlooking the town. Whether you’ve been a part of previous events or are joining for the first time\, kick off spring with us and showcase your commitment to the environment! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year\, we are branding our event with the Lone Pine — a locally iconic tree that looks out over our town from its perch high up in Shenandoah National Park\, alongside mile marker 3.8 of Skyline Drive. Standing just over an estimated 100’ tall with a 36” dbh (diameter breast-high)\, the Lone Pine is an Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus)\, a native evergreen tree species known for its beauty and longevity. Speaking of which\, we estimate that the Lone Pine was just a sapling when Skyline Drive was being built back in the 1930s\, putting this tree between 90 and 100 years old. \n\n\n\nFor many\, this tree is a waypoint\, a waving flag welcoming you back home after a trip away. For others\, the pine represents a symbol of strength\, a sentinel keeping a watchful eye over the community below. \n\n\n\nThe event will connect you with diverse\, nature-oriented conservation groups that showcase environmental stewardship at its best. There will be a petting zoo\, kids activities\, food trucks\, plants for sale\, tons of free give-aways\, a beekeeping and apothecary demo (11 a.m.)\, a wildlife education program by the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center (12-12:30 p.m.)\, electric vehicle display\, and an Arbor Day tree planting ceremony (1 p.m.)!
