DESCRIPTION:Laissez les bons temps rouler with a low-stress ride through the streets of Charlottesville\, followed by a (bikes optional) Karnival Krewe procession! Deck out your bike (and yourself) with Mardi Gras flair\, bright colors\, and music! The progressive celebration will finish at Champion Brewing Company with music by Baby Jo’s. \n\n\n\nCredit Hannah Pearce\n\n\n\nInvite your friends and make some new ones! Whether you’re an experienced bicyclist or not\, come out and enjoy a fun evening. It’s free and open to all. \n\n\n\nWe’ll gather at Quality Pie (309 Avon Street\, Charlottesville\, VA 22902) starting at 4:30 p.m. The ride itself will begin at 5:30 p.m.\, follow bike lanes and quiet neighborhood streets wherever possible. We will stop and take at least one break in a park along the way. The ride will return to Quality Pie\, at which point we will join a (bikes optional) procession (starting at 6:30 p.m.) through the streets of Belmont\, ending at Champion Brewing Company\, where there will be live music from Baby Jo’s. \n\n\n\nStaff and volunteers from Community Bikes and the Piedmont Environmental Council will be on-hand to help. Cycling promotes physical\, social\, and mental health\, helps reduce car use\, enhances mobility and independence\, and is economical for both public and personal budgets. \n\n\n\nResearchers Ralph Buehler & John Pucher will talk about their new book\, Cycling for Sustainable Cities (MIT Press)\, which describes ways to make city cycling safe\, practical\, and convenient for all ages and abilities. DESCRIPTION:Would you like to see Charlottesville and Albemarle be safer and better connected\, with more access to the outdoors and less pollution? Are you ready to work on it in a coordinated way?At this free half-day workshop\, representatives from organizations\, local businesses\, agencies and passionate individuals who share a mission to promote walking\, biking\, running\, everyday access nature and active lifestyles will gather to identify areas of collaboration and to create a joint work plan. They will form workgroups and make commitments to accomplish specific progress within the next year. \n\n\n\n*Pre-registration is required. | Registrant Info \n\n\n\nThe summit will be broken up into two sessions with a 90-minute break for lunch:  \n\n\n\nMorning session: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.* BreakAfternoon session: 1 – 3 p.m.*Note the slight time change. Why or why not?Angie says that our assumptions about who is getting injured and dying might be wrong. Does it matter? Does it suggest targeted approaches and solutions?What are some factors that Angie says make some people more likely to be injured or killed than others? She also outlines some geographic considerations. How do these overlap and where can those zones be found in our area?There are two women in the book who lose sons in car crashes: Amy Cohen and Raquel Nelson. Their experiences are very different. How do you think their race and social status impacted their treatment?Explain the significance of Virginia’s new statute decriminalizing jay-walking. What are the socioeconomic implications? Will it change pedestrian or driver behaviors? Will it save lives? What are reasonable next steps?Are bigger vehicles an irreversible trend? But does it need to be? Are there ways to talk about safety for pedestrians that don’t diminish drivers’ access to opportunities?In our federal system it’s not always clear which level of government ought to fund local transportation. Where\, in your opinion\, ought that responsibility reside? What actions can you take to bring about change at that particular level?Throughout the book\, Angie pushes against the prevalent idea that most traffic fatalities are caused by users (often pedestrians’) rather than the system. Do you think the advent of autonomous vehicles will prove her wrong or prescient?Is every preventable death an injustice? If so\, why? If not\, how do we decide?Is more enforcement a good idea?
