PEC empowers residents to protect what makes the Piedmont a wonderful place, and works with citizens to conserve land, protect air and water quality, celebrate historic resources, build smart transportation networks, promote sustainable energy choices, restore wildlife habitat and improve people’s access to nature.

Description of Position

The Major Gifts Officer is part of a team of staff, board members and volunteers committed to building PEC’s major donors. PEC has an existing base of supporters and is working to reach out to new constituencies in the region. The Major Gifts Officer has a critical role supporting multiple programs, events, and campaigns.

Areas of Responsibility

The Major Gifts Officer will report to the Director of Development and be responsible for the duties outlined below:

Major Gift Solicitation

  • Responsible for soliciting gifts of $1,000 and higher.
  • Manage relationships with approximately 50 prospective donors and will be expected to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward.
  • Manage a portfolio of primary prospects in Orange, Culpeper and Madison Counties.
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle: Initiate contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors. Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers. Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure. Make solicitations when appropriate. Maintain stewardship contacts with donors; adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate empathetic disposition, and perseverance; reflect optimistic and positive attitude, and convey sensitivity to needs of the donors.
  • Stay informed and engaged through participation in staff meetings, program meetings, and program delivery, especially program events and activities that impact the geography of the potential donors. Focus on securing support for programs and projects in Orange, Culpeper and Madison
  • Work collaboratively with and in support of other development staff to cultivate and solicit donors for region-wide priorities.
  • Monitor all prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations.


  • Enter donor information in donor database.
  • Update and maintain donor records as needed per contact with donor.


  • Organize fundraising events
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and at least two years related work experience or equivalent;
  • Three to five year’s successful experience in major or planned gift fundraising.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the needs and interests of major gift donors in order to develop relationships.
  • Demonstrated leadership and the ability to successfully manage multi-functional or diverse areas.
  • Successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments.
  • Knowledge and experience with Google Apps and Microsoft Office productivity software is required
  • Experience using donor database or CRM software (i.e. Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, EveryAction, etc)
  • Knowledge of digital fundraising is a plus

  • Excellent written and oral interpersonal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated high energy level and flexibility, pleasant persona coupled with sound judgement; flexible, discreet and able to maintain confidential information, knowledge of correct protocol for specific situations.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.


  • Salary will be commensurate with experience.
