The 2017 Charlottesville Area Buy Fresh Buy Local Guide has been released! If you live in Charlottesville, Albemarle or Greene you should have received a copy of our guide in the mailbox, but you can also check out the web version [pdf] today.

What's in it:

Our Buy Fresh Buy Local guide helps people find local farms, restaurants and markets. It's released every spring, right around this time. The guide was sent to 72,859 homes, and features over 210 local food producers and businesses. Among the listings are 110 local farms/orchards, 12 farmers markets, 25 wineries/breweries, 30 restaurants/caterers, 25 specialty food producers and 13 retailers all in the Charlottesville area.

Other items include a reminder for upcoming farm tours and events like the Heritage Harvest Festival, a fruit and vegetable availability calendar, tips on canning for home and business, a recipe for a fresh salad using beets and apples, and information about using SNAP benefits at several Charlottesville farmers markets. The guide also features profiles of River Oak Farm, a livestock and poultry farm in Nelson County, and Schuyler Greens Company, a greenhouse operation producing a wide variety of lettuces and greens.

The handy travel map included in the guide is your weekend road map to vegetable, berry and livestock farms with open hours, farmers markets, restaurants, and wineries, breweries and distilleries.

We also highlight a couple PEC projects related to local agriculture -- an update on the land stewardship projects at Roundabout Meadows at Gilbert’s Corner, and a success story from one of our farmland leasing social events.
