Proposed Cell Tower Extension in Delaplane
A telecommunications special exception has been submitted for an existing monopole located on John Marshall Highway in Delaplane. The applicant is seeking to extend an 80 foot monopole to 90 feet in order to add 9 antennas to serve customers along John Marshall Highway and I-66. See map.
The monopole is on land under a conservation easement, within sight of several other easements, along a scenic highway, and a scenic river. A balloon test will be conducted on September 11 and 12. In addition, the Planning Commission will conduct a site visit on September 11, 2009.
Recent analysis by the County shows that the tower was not built in the location where it was permitted. The County's consultant now questions the height of the tower, the location of exiting wireless carriers, the actual location of future co-location arrays, the actual physical location of the tower, set back requirements, and tree screening requirements. Based upon this, it appears that none of the application is valid.
