Rappahannock County: Local Food at School

Local Food Day in Rappahannock

Rappahannock County schools celebrated their second Local Food Day, serving a delicious local lunch in all of the public school cafeterias -- hamburgers, salad and apple crisp that came from Adams Slaughterhouse, Williams Orchard, Jenkins Orchard and the Farm at Sunnyside. The community pitched in, with 29 volunteers, including PEC staff, helping to peel, core, and slice apples, cut radishes, and prep carrots. A number of local farmers, including some who grew the ingredients for this lunch, were there in the cafeterias to talk with students about eating local. Also present were the Superintendent of Schools and folks from PEC, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Flavor Magazine, the local Board of Supervisors and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Serving local foods for lunch is part of the Rappahannock schools' efforts to integrate agriculture into the curriculum, through the Farm-to-Table program, with school gardens and agriculture electives at both the high school and elementary school.
