For PTOs

The Bright Futures Project

The Bright Futures Project is a grassroots program by the Piedmont Environmental Council to engage students about the importance of energy conservation through selling compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) as a school fund-raiser. This project offers a great opportunity for students to learn about energy conservation and reducing greenhouse gases, all while raising money for their schools.  Moreover, through  classroom learning and community outreach, students selling CFLs would help educate the community at large about the importance of energy conservation.

CFLs use 75% less energy than traditional incandescents and last 10-13 times as long.  Unlike incandescent bulbs, which use 90% of their electrical consumption to produce heat, CFLs reduce home cooling costs through their more efficient design.  They represent a great opportunity to take the issues of climate change and energy conservation into our own hands, so we all can have a Bright Future.

If 25 students in a classroom each sells a 3-pack of CFLs, it would be equivalent to:

  • Saving $4,100 in energy costs, or
  • Preventing 50,000 lbs of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, or
  • Planting 17 trees, or
  • Taking .5 cars off the road for a year.

PTOs can sell three different products and receive a discount for the CFL orders of 500 and above.

We have also included LED Christmas lights as a new item of interest. LED strands use 2.4 to 4.5 watts, making them less costly to use than standard string lights. They have a 50,000 hour life expectancy, with a 5-year warranty. Since they use so little energy, they are also a safer alternative on the Christmas tree, and the lights are less likely to fade with age. An added bonus: If one bulb burns out, the rest of the strand will stay lit.
