Local Students Dedicated to Protecting the Piedmont

Junior Stewards Club

In March 2008, local students from The Wakefield School in The Plains, Virginia met with The Hill School students from Middleburg, Virginia to share information about their activities and environmental concerns. The Junior Stewards Club from Wakefield School is a student organization committed to educating middle school children about conservation and current environmental issues facing the Piedmont. At the meeting, The Junior Stewards presented information and answered questions about several of the projects they are addressing-- the proposed 500-kV power line, land protection through conservation easements, minimizing the environmental footprint by buying locally, and using smart development in Loudoun and Fauquier counties. After the discussions, The Junior Stewards Club presented the Tree Hugger Club with t-shirts, frisbees, and pencils. They also encouraged them to continue with their efforts and to become more involved with conservation.

The Junior Stewards Club also held a Spring fundraiser selling baked goods and hand-painted flower pots filled with seeds and gardening goodies at Arbor Day in Middleburg. After the event, the club generously donated their $500 proceeds to The Piedmont Environmental Council.
