Virginia Energy Plan
Virginia policy legislation established an energy policy for the Commonwealth and directed the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME) to prepare a ten-year comprehensive Virginia Energy Plan (VEP) to implement the Commonwealth's energy policy. The Plan was originally released on September 12th, 2007 and was updated on July 1, 2010.
The 2010 Virginia Energy Plan assesses the state's energy picture through an examination of the state's primary energy sources: electricity, coal, nuclear, natural gas, renewables, and petroleum.

The DMME plan recommends actions to meet three goals:
- Make Virginia the energy capital of the East Coast by growing both traditional and alternative energy production, jobs and investment and increasing the use of conservation and efficiency.
- Expand public education about Virginia's energy production and consumption, its effect on our economy, and how Virginians can use energy more efficiently.
- Maximize the investment in clean energy research and development through the work of the Universities Clean Energy Development and Economic Stimulus Foundation.
