NIETC Timeline

March 6, 2006

Both PJM and Allegheny filed requests to the Department of Energy to ask for early designation of a path into the DC-Baltimore Metropolitan Region as a "National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor" or NIETC.

October 10, 2006

In response to a comment period on the 2006 National Electric Transmission Congestion Study, PJM and Allegheny both submitted revised NIETC requests. PJM requested three National Interest Corridors - the Allegheny Mountain Corridor, the Delaware River Corridor and the Mid-Atlantic Corridor.

May 7, 2007

The Department of Energy designated two draft NIETC and set a 60-day comment period ending July 6, 2007.

October 2, 2007

The Department of Energy announced the designation of two National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors, one on each coast. The east coast corridor includes over 200 counties in 8 Mid-Atlantic states, including 15 counties in Virginia.
