Funding Available for Livestock Fencing Along the Upper Hazel River
The Upper Hazel River Watershed, which includes many segments currently on the State list of impaired waterways, has been targeted for full reimbursements to farmers who establish riparian buffers and install livestock-exclusion fencing. The Hazel River is particularly important, comprising the headwaters of the Rappahannock River which is a State Scenic River, a public water source for Fredericksburg, and a major tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. The funding partnership between PEC, the Krebser Fund and the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District and the Rappahannock County government will, for the first time, make such Best Management Practices cost-neutral for landowners.
For more information, please contact Don Loock, PEC's Rappahannock Land Conservation Officer at 540-522-4222 or Beth Burnam, PEC's Madison Land Conservation Officer at 540-948-3854.
