Farm Seminar A Success

(Charlottesville, VA - March 11, 2009) The Piedmont Environmental Council's recent educational seminar, "Hosting the Small Farm Dream: Is It Right For You?" was a success with over 60 attendees fully engaged in the three and one-half hour program.

The purpose of the seminar was to help local residents explore the potential for profit on their land, to learn about farmer-landowner partnership options, review local case studies, discuss pros and cons of different models and lease arrangements, and consider next steps.

Response to the seminar was positive. "This workshop is a fabulous tool to bring it all together and create a truly sustainable farming community," said Ramona Huff, of Gryffon's Aerie. Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm was equally pleased, "Thanks to PEC for hosting this workshop, it addresses perhaps one of the biggest needs of our hour."

"We are excited to bring this program to area residents about how they can engage themselves in farming and make a profit, while helping farmers access quality farmland," said Melissa Wiley of the Piedmont Environmental Council. This community has been very supportive of the local foods movement and we are pleased to help bring this educational resource to its residents."
