Water issues override Hazel River designation

"State Scenic River recommendations might be entering a period of drought in Rappahannock County. At the end of a day during which it heard dismaying estimates of drought-related crop damage in the county, and heard others caution against “giving away” river-related rights to the state for a variety of reasons, the county Board of Supervisors declined Monday night to recommend State Scenic River status for an eight-mile stretch of the Hazel between Route 231 and the Culpeper County line. "
Rappahannock County Grows A Bit Smaller

"Fewer people called Rappahannock County and the town of Washington home in 2009 than in 2000. The county’s population dipped from a recorded 7,102 on April 1, 2000 to 7,035 on July 1, 2009, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s most recent estimates. That occurred even though the number of births exceeded deaths — 693 births compared to 633 deaths. The county also added 15 people during that nine year period due to immigration or military service people returning, according to Robert Bernstein, public affairs specialist for the Census Bureau."
