Increased food concerns cause growth in canning

Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, August 22, 2010

"When Krista Ehlert started canning last year, she wondered if anyone else spent time cleaning, snapping and stuffing green beans into jars. "I started to think I was the only person who still did it," said Ehlert, a 41-year-old defense contractor at Quantico Marine Corps Base and Orange County resident. Instead of being the last canner on earth, Ehlert may be the new face of it. Across the nation, consumers concerned about how their food is grown and processed are taking jars and lids into their own hands."

Walmart lawsuit court date set for Jan. 25

Orange County Review, August 18, 2010

"The Wal-Mart case will not find a resolution in 2010. In Orange County Circuit Court Friday, Judge Daniel Bouton scheduled Jan. 25 to begin the week-long trial of a lawsuit that challenges Orange County’s approval of a special use permit for the big-box retailer last summer. The permit allows the construction of a Wal-Mart Supercenter on Route 3, on commercially zoned land, in close proximity to the Wilderness Battlefield. "

Business-friendly?

Orange County Review, August 18, 2010

"Is Orange business friendly? The answer, as with any political question, is: it depends on who you ask. The town, like most municipalities, has taxes and fees that fund citizen services. Orange restaurants collect meals taxes and local businesses pay commercial water and sewer rates that are higher simply because they’re businesses. But earlier this month, town council members-hoping to stimulate business growth-cut water and sewer availability fees in half. "

Big, bold colors fit for a president

Daily Progress, August 20, 2010

"The dining room at James Madison’s Montpelier is getting an antique update as hand-stamped wallpaper goes up on the walls. The project is part of the $1.5 million second phase in the restoration of the Madison home. It is the first project in a long-term plan to restore the house to the way it would have looked when James and Dolley Madison retired from Washington after his presidency ended in 1817. "

Planners support cell tower at Montpelier

Culpeper Star-Exponent, August 11, 2010

"The Orange County Planning Commission recommended the approval of a special use permit that would allow the construction of a wireless tower disguised as a pine tree to be built on the grounds of Montpelier. "

Weekends With The Madisons

Culpeper Star-Exponent, July 23, 2010

"Fourth president James Madison and his wife, Dolley, often fled muggy Washington, D.C., during the summer months for the theoretically cooler respite of Madison’s lifelong country home at Montpelier in Orange County. In that tradition, James and Dolley re-enactors will appear at Montpelier each weekend, starting Saturday, through mid-September."

Supervisors No Longer Part Of Joint Planning Group

Orange County Review, July 21, 2010

"In somewhat of a surprise move last week, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to pull the county out of the joint planning area subcommittee, effectively dissolving the group."

County, Walmart Foes Return To Court

Orange County Review, July 21, 2010

"Over a year ago the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved a special use permit for the construction of a Wal-Mart Supercenter on Route 3. Today that lot remains untouched, and ground has been broken only on a growing mound of litigation."

Walmart Near Battlefield Back In Va Court

Washington Examiner, July 13, 2010

"Attorneys are due back in court next month in the battle over a Walmart Supercenter proposed near an endangered Civil War battlefield in northern Virginia. A trial date was expected to be scheduled at a hearing Tuesday in Orange Circuit Court, but lingering issues delayed that decision until an Aug. 13 hearing. "

Trash To Treasure?

Orange County Review, July 14, 2010

"What was once a practice championed almost exclusively by environmentalists, has become a state mandate. Recycling is no longer just a good idea, it’s the law, and the General Assembly requires that counties recycle at least 15 percent of all waste. In Orange County, a county that consistently exceeds the requirement, meeting that mandate has been easy, but could be even easier."

Master Gardeners Share Expertise At Orange Farmers Market

Orange County Review, July 14, 2010

"Beginning this Saturday, July 17, Master Gardeners will be at the Orange Farmers Market the third Saturday of each month. Stop by and check out the latest on deer management-this month’s focus-with information on deer-resistant plants, repellants and protections. Bring your gardening questions, pick up soil sample kits or simply stop in while you’re at the market to learn more about the Master Gardener program. "
