"Stanardsville’s Judie Pagter says that Greene County automobile drivers might soon be sharing more of their roads with horses. “We’re losing our access to the trails in Shenandoah National Park,” said the avid horsewoman, who is advocating for horse trails … or at least for the creation of an access route to the park designated specifically for horseback riders. "Greene’s planning commission and board of supervisors held a joint workshop Tuesday, Oct. 13 to discuss changes to the county’s comprehensive plan. The plan, adopted by state mandate and reviewed nominally every five years, identifies land use ordinances as tools that can manage growth, and at issue is the county’s growth area. For this update, the county enlisted the help of the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission and Charlottesville’s Renaissance Group to work with its planning department and citizens to create a preferred growth scenario."

"The Greene County Planning Commission will soon begin public hearings about what should be written into the Comprehensive Plan update due this year. Currently, the county’s growth area is centered on the intersection of U.S. 29 and 33 in Ruckersville, and the north side of the Stanardsville bypass – but some would like that changed."

"Greene’s supervisors voted unanimously to adopt the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission’s legislative agenda at their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, Oct. 13. “You all will be getting the last crack at it,“ said legislative liaison David Blount. The agenda has already been adopted by the other localities in the district, which are the City of Charlottesville and other than Greene, the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa and Nelson. "The county may be issuing a new special use permit as a result of the Greene Acres Homeowners Association’s Lake Festival and Flea Market which was held Oct. 2. County ordinance requires that anyone who puts on a carnival, fair or circus be issued a special use permit for that purpose, at a one-time cost of $500."

"Fried Companies Inc (FCI) Chief Operating Officer Steve Jones is looking to the future. With the start of the new Walmart Supercenter on Route 29 in Ruckersville anticipated in the very near future, he thinks more attention will be paid to the area, he says. FCI is envisioning its Rapidan Center - located just minutes south of the Walmart site - as a “true mixed-use development, with class A office buildings, a community retail center support retail and outparcels,“ says Jones."

"The Stanardsville Area Revitalization project, or *STAR*, forges ahead with efforts to revitalize the county seat’s downtown, but an area critical to any hopes of attracting new businesses continues to be troubled. Last year, there were 15 calls “of disturbance and or of a serious nature” to the area that encompasses parts of Main Street and Ford Avenue, says Chief Deputy Major Randall Snead. To date this year, there have been more than 30 such calls, and the sheriff’s office continues to send extra patrols into the area."

Restocking Greene Lake

"Eighteen months ago, water was found bubbling up out of the ground near Greene Acres Lake, leading to the discovery that its dam had sprung a leak. Residents banded together to see that thousands of dollars worth of fish were transferred to other habitats, the lake was drained and its bed cleaned up. Now the Greene Acres Homeowners Association is going all out Saturday to put on its Lake Festival and Flea Market in an effort to put life back into its lake. The 27-acre, man-made Greene Acres Lake is nestled in the mountains, just a mile north of Stanardsville."
