"Nearly 5,000 acres of undeveloped land in Greene, Albemarle and Orange counties in 2011 were protected by conservation easement from development, according to the Piedmont Environmental Council. In Albemarle County, 2,283 additional acres were put under easements in 2011, about 1,300 acres in Greene County and 1,300 acres of Orange County, according to Rex Linville, a land conservation officer for the council."
VDOT wants to upgrade Matthew Mill Road

"The Virginia Department of Transportation will host a public hearing next week on a proposed project to improve the intersection of Matthew Mill Road and U.S. 29 in Greene County. The hearing is set for Wednesday, Jan. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ruckersville Elementary School, 105 Progress Place."

"Culpeper County was among nine winners of the “Green Government Challenge,” announced earlier this month. The challenge is part of the Virginia Municipal League initiated “Go Green Virginia” campaign, which began in 2007. It is a competition between counties, cities and towns and involves earning points by establishing, implementing and adopting policies or actions that reduce energy usage and promote sustainability. There were 33 entries in the contest."

"Three Greene County families have granted conservation easements to the state, providing protection against large-scale development for nearly 400 acres of mountainside. Virginia Department of Forestry officials said they have recorded easements protecting 395 acres on Snow and Hightop mountains west of Stanardsville...The donations were the result of efforts by the Blue Ridge Foothills Conservancy, Piedmont Environmental Council and the forestry department, with support from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation."

Public hearing set for Greene road improvements

"The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing on proposed improvements to an intersection in Greene County, according to a news release from the agency. The meeting is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 11 at Ruckersville Elementary School, at 105 Progress Place. The $2.27 million project includes upgrades to the intersection of Matthews Mill Road (Route 607) and U.S. 29."

Visitor Center volunteers make rewarding trip to National Park

"The Greene County Economic Development Authority took a bunch of its volunteers on a field trip of sorts Wednesday, Oct. 26, to Big Meadows Lodge in Shenandoah National Park. The trip was part educational, part reward for some of the 15 volunteers who man the Greene County Visitor Center office on U.S. 29."

"The Greene County School Board knows its facilities are at capacity, and more students are on the way. What the board members don’t know is: How many more students are coming and when?...The School Board’s immediate concern on Wednesday appeared to be the Fried Cos. Inc.’s Creekside development along U.S. 29 in southern Greene County. The company wants to rezone the property from 800 single-family homes to a planned urban development with 600 single-family homes and 580 townhouses. Fried had been scheduled to go before the Planning Commission this month, but has requested more time."

Greene supervisors cap rezoning fees at $12,000

"The Greene County Board of Supervisors has agreed to cap its rezoning application fees. At its July 12 meeting, the supervisors decided to limit its rezoning fees to a maximum of $12,000, based on a 4-1 consensus with Supervisor Carl Schmitt dissenting. The county’s fee schedule charges $2,000 plus $100 per acre for a rezoning application, and previously did not specify a maximum fee."
