Fitch Urges Council To Lead On Waste-to-Energy Plan

Fauquier Times-Democrat, March 12, 2010

"At the March work session, Warrenton Mayor George Fitch on March 4 once again asked the town council about its interest in taking the lead in a waste-to-energy project. Fitch has promoted a waste-to-energy plant at the county landfill for several years. It would convert garbage into electricity and fuel. The county initially expressed interest in participating, but that interest waned due to the project’s $50 million price tag. Who would pay it hasn’t been completely determined, but Fitch insists “private industry” will take all the risk. "

Easement Appeal Grows In Piedmont

Fauquier Times-Democrat, February 17, 2010

" Little about Jan Wiley’s farm near Calverton will ever change. Except by nature, the tall stand of trees that hides her home and barns from the road, the pretty rolling pasture and the two-acre pond off her backyard deck will remain untouched indefinitely. And that’s just the way Wiley wants things, which explains why she put a conservation easement on her 173-acre Walnut Hill Farm off Shenandoah Path last year. "

"Balancing recreational activities, such as camping and hunting, with protecting water quality, plants and animals along the Rappahannock and Rapidan rivers, is a key focus of Fredericksburg’s watershed property management plan. "

Town Seeks To Connect Bike Trails

Fauquier Times-Democrat, March 17, 2010

"Warrenton resident Mark Nesfeder is often on the run. Over the years, an interest in finding new places to jog prompted him to join Warrenton and Fauquier bicycle and trail committees. As a member of Warrenton’s pedestrian/bike plan committee in 2007, he helped identify existing walkways, bike trails and “shared-use paths” in the town. At last count, Warrenton boasted approximately 45 miles of such trails. “We did an inventory and offered suggestions on where we thought important connections [between existing and new trails] should be made,” Nesfeder said. Rappahannock Plan Is Coming Into Focus

Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, February 3, 2010

"A picture of how Fredericksburg’s vast swath of riverfront easement land should be used--or left alone--is beginning to emerge. A committee will unveil a draft watershed management plan Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. at the University of Mary Washington’s Jepson Center. It will outline how the property will be managed for access, recreation and wildlife, and the public will get another chance to weigh in...The Fredericksburg City Council in 2006 created a permanent conservation easement on more than 4,200 acres running more than 20 miles along the Rappahannock and Rapidan rivers. "

Horses Hold Strong In Fauquier, Piedmont

Fauquier Times-Democrat, January 12, 2010

" In what’s widely considered the only positive population trend in Fauquier County, horses continue to gallop ahead of predicted rates of growth, increasing by more than 1,000 in three years between a pair of equine census counts in the first decade of the new century. A horse and farm survey by the Virginia Horse Industry Board and the Agricultural Statistics Service indicated there were an estimated 215,000 horses, ponies, and mules in Virginia in 2006, up 26 percent from the 170,000 here in 2001."

Developer Regroups, Project On Hold

Fauquier Times-Democrat, December 11, 2009

" Hold everything. That’s essentially what an attorney for Wilson Land LLC told Warrenton’s director of Planning and Community Development in a Dec. 3 letter. The letter arrived less than two hours before the Warrenton Town Council was to discuss the scope of the project and other issues at its regularly scheduled work session. It came as a surprise to Mayor George Fitch, who said the applicant was pushing hard for the council to make a decision regarding the project. Wilson Land wants to develop Warrenton Greene on a 42-acre site it owns behind Country Chevrolet. "

Board Delays Decision On Divisive Winery Proposal

Fauquier Times-Democrat, November 18, 2009

"Talk about the understatement of the night. “This is obviously a very involved issue,” Fauquier board of supervisors chairman Holder Trumbo (Scott District) said last Thursday night after an hour-long public hearing on proposed changes to the county’s winery ordinance."

Town’s Zoning Changes Push Mixed Uses

Fauquier Times-Democrat, November 18, 2009

" With a 6-1 vote, the Warrenton Town Council on Tuesday approved a zoning ordinance text amendment for planned unit development. The changes will apply to the development of parcels situated on at least 25 acres in a commercial or industrial district. There are three to five such properties within the town, according to Chris Mothersead, Warrenton’s director of Planning and Community Development. "

Preservationists Hail Buckland As Historic Jewel

Fauquier Times-Democrat, October 30, 2009

"Development is the name of the game in Northern Virginia; except in one small neighborhood. Situated on the border between Prince William and Fauquier counties, the village of Buckland is easy to miss. Commuters fly by on U.S. 29, often not aware that they are passing through one of the nation’s best examples of an 18th-century village. “This is a very important site on the Journey Through Hallowed Ground for so many reasons,” said Sharon Cavileer, interim director of the Prince William County – Manassas Convention and Visitors Bureau.
