On Jan. 12, the board held a 27-minute public hearing during which 10 people spoke, including several neighbors who voiced concerns about the project’s potential effects on their drinking water wells and area roads. "Fauquier County put more than twice as many acres under conservation easement in 2011 than it did in the previous year. That amounts to 3,150 acres, surpassing all other Virginia counties for the period, according to the Warrentonbased Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC). “Fauquier was far and way ahead of the other counties,” said Heather Richards, PEC’s vice president for conservation and rural programs. “People in Fauquier have plenty of options and the county’s been a big player in that. It hasn’t slacked off on its PDR program.” "
Governor McDonnell Announces $1.2 million in Farmland Preservation Grants

"Governor Bob McDonnell today announced the distribution of $1.2 million in farmland preservation grants from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) to 13 Virginia localities. This is a significant increase from the $100,000 available last fiscal year for state matching funds. Localities must use the grant monies to preserve farmland within their boundaries through local Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) programs. PDR programs compensate landowners who permanently preserve their land by voluntarily placing a perpetual conservation easement on it. "
Albemarle, Clarke, and Fauquier were among the counties to receive funding.

"The John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District recently recognized individuals who have made contributions to protecting Fauquier County’s natural resources through education and the implementation of conservation practices that protect the quality of local waters. Gina Farrar of Orlean received the Edwin Gulick Conservation Educator Award. Ms. Farrar for 27 years has hosted The Warrenton Garden Club’s Nature Camp, in cooperation with the Piedmont Environmental Council, at her farm along the Rappahannock River."
Developer sues county over Catlett plan

"The two-year dispute over the Village of Catlett mixed-use plan landed in court Wednesday as the developer filed suit against the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors. In December, the board of supervisors rejected landowner Catlett Farm LLC’s proposal for 225 homes and 85,000 square feet of commercial space at U.S. 28 and Dumfries Road. On Wednesday, the landowner filed a lawsuit in Fauquier County Circuit Court against the supervisors, claiming the decision ignores the county comprehensive plan’s vision for the 793-acre site. "

On Dec. 29, a Virginia conservation officer from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries rescued a bald eagle and brought it to the Wildlife Center in Waynesboro. The veterinary staff there quickly determined that the bird, which had been found down in a field, unable to fly, was suffering from lead poisoning. "
