Albemarle Land Conservation Fund

Protected Property in Albemarle County

Albemarle County is an area with unique natural, cultural and historical features. It has the Shenandoah National Park, the Southwest Mountains Rural Historical District, rolling agricultural lands and waterways of exceptional beauty. It is also home to Monticello, the University of Virginia, and the city of Charlottesville. Because the County is such an attractive place to live, it is now under severe pressure from growth and urban development, and many of its most treasured resources are at risk.

In 1999, PEC created the Albemarle Land Conservation Fund (ALCF), a fund to conserve at-risk properties in Albemarle County. The ALCF was created because it was increasingly clear that the Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) could not stem the growing development pressures in the County just through the pursuit of easement donations, nor for that matter, through regulatory means. There are key pieces of property owned by people who cannot afford to donate easements, or who need to sell property to generate cash. Such properties can be protected only through acquisition of a fee simple interest or an easement.
