Virginia Could Cut Peak Electricity Use by 17%

Read the Report (PDF)

A 2007 study by a nationally respected firm has shown that, within ten years, Virginia could reduce energy demand by 17% at peak hours -- the critical times when it's possible for transmission lines to become congested. These strategic reductions would amount to energy savings of almost 10% of Virginia's total demand. The study by Summit Blue Consulting LLC (PDF) found that 17% savings at peak hours are readily achievable through practical, incentive-based programs to encourage:
- High-efficiency lighting
- Improvements to heating and air conditioning systems
- Energy-smart construction
- Energy-smart appliances and office equipment
- Optimal efficiency at commercial data centers

These savings are significant enough to eliminate any justification for a new transmission line. They will also save consumers money, advance Virginia's standing in the 21st century's increasingly "green" economy, and support efforts to slow climate change.

Alternatively, the state could allow construction of transmission lines that will scar cherished landscapes and lower property values as they link northern cities to some of America's oldest and dirtiest coal-fired power plants.

As the study by Summit Blue reports, "This is a critical time for the Commonwealth as large-scale electric infrastructure investments are being considered throughout the region. Investments not made on the demand-side now may be lost forever as growing energy needs are met through higher cost supply and transmission investments."

The study pointed out that Virginia could reduce energy use even more through demand management techniques, which use virtually unnoticeable adjustments to cut demand at peak hours. Significant savings are well within our reach because Virginia has so far done so little, tying for last among the 50 states for our investments in energy conservation.

The proposed transmission line represents an investment in outdated and dangerous energy strategies. Virginia can do better, rising to the challenges of the 21st Century. Read the Report (PDF)
